Smile BMW 5 series 2006 steering lock fault

I have a 5 series bmw with a suspected steering lock fault. The customer has newly bought the vehicle and called me out with a non start fault . vehicle using a slot in column key . i noticed the steering lock was not engaged but could not get ignition . after a battery reset the vehicle started and operated as it should , steering lock engaging and disengaging for about 6 ignition cycles.

the last time i removed the key the steering lock didn't engage and is back to square one again!!!! non start and no ignition

If anybody has any images of how to remove or dismantle i would be very greatful

My friend has ista that i can borrow, how would you programme a new steering lock without the ignition on ???

I have done very little work with this system , is it similar to vw that gives you ignition when fitting new ignition lock to allow programming ????

    Is programming a s/h unit possible ???

Thanks in advance for any advice given
