I have had P0088 on a 2.0 TDCI Mondeo 2007. It was not high fuel pressure. It was the crank sensor wiring that had been previously trapped in the bell housing after a clutch change. All I can think is that the ECU defaults to high fuel rail pressure mode to kill the engine as soon as possible after it thinks it's lost sync. P0088 was the only code on the car and did the same as yours and came back after 15 mins or so.
