can either of these switches just have an ethernet cable plugged into it then into my existing wireless router so then i have another 8 ports off the switch?

the following link will tell you how to go about adding extra ports to an existing router.

Just buy a cheap self managed switch either a 10/100 or a gigabit one. Not knowing your internal network and weather you are useing gigabit network. I'd say just a grab a 10/100 for now. Its a 100m/bit connection (10 - 12 mega bytes per sec transfer rate) which is faster then all current UK bb rates. (incase you UK)

Simple to install as well, Plug it in, Put a lead from any port to a switch port on your router. Plug stuff in and use.

This one (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/132457) is cheap as chips. Its not going to do anything major like traffic prioritising for viop v http. But for a home/small office situation it will do what you need. Just plug it in and ignore it.

Yes.

Just use a crossover cable (they will come with 1) to join the 2 ports and plug the extra devices in the new ports.
