it sounds like you have recently updated the DSi.. This would explain why the card no longer works.. you need to update the firmware for the DSi card you have bought

Hi
As far as I know nothing has been updated. The problem is is that none of his original games work either. We also get the same error message when trying to go into system settings. The only thing that works is the camera.

from what i can see and know the error you describe is down to only a couple of things.. namely that the DSi has updated and now blocks all pirated games and carts like the R4i
If original games wont work then i suggest you take it back to where you bought it from and get it replaced under warranty
Are the original games definitely 'original'..??
If you got the games off ebay there is a real chance that they are pirated..

All of the games are original from places like Asda, Game, HMV etc.

Take it back to the shop you bought it from show them the problem and get it replaced under the warranty..
The error you are seeing is normally from using a pirated or fake card..
However this time it may be an internal operating error with the machine..
i.e. its knackered :D

Thanks for the help, I'll take it back. Can the shop tell that I've been using a r4i card?

No... they cant and even if they ask if you have, play dumb..
Ideally take your original games with you to show them ;)

No, even when there's nothing in the DSI it still has the black error screen
