Try ponuprog from lancos. Its a diy project and works wonders

i have building 4 interface for avr , easy avr , stk300 ,.... 4 interface is ok with Other Atmega

but with Atmega128 16 AU not ok i think this chut have Lock bit

Devices that are purchased from China,mainly,in case of failure can not be repaired because their MCU have no access to reading mcu.I think,not only locked but have no access to even ERASING mcu.I have experience like you in make your self many programmers and adapters but with this mcu,no one success.Cheers!
