Can be either. An 8GB stick will give you approximately 3 to 3 and a half hours space for recordings. The SV4 uses a variable bit rate for its video recordings and as such the file size varies depending on the content being recorded. i.e., sports, docs or films. Not all recordings of the same duration will create the same size files.

yea you can use a usb stick but do both .. but if your gonna be recording on it then i would suggest that you use a usb HDD as it uses a lot of space to record (think its something like 20-25 min per gig)

Should hold seven to eight hours dependent on the type of recordings, as I said above. How much was it going for?

Cheers just dont go for a cheap version as it will cause you some recording lags. I use a 250GB WD external passport HDD:

Just at bit dearer at around ?55 to ?60 dependent on where you get it. But works great and looks great alongside the SV4. Plus as you can see plenty of capacity.

Recommendation is based upon tests carried out. This is due to the power load from the USB. 320GB should work at a push and use the 500GB for your PC as said.

Thanks satsmo i forgot to mention that the 320gig has a external power suply and the new 500 will also have a power suply would that be better for the sv4

Yes an external power supply will be better. You could try the 500 if you want but I have heard that there are problems with that size of HDD, when used on the SV4.

i`m running a 16gb sd card with a reader, shoved in the slot at the rear.

you can upload jpegs , mp3`s and the firmware and use it to your hearts content...

use the hdd button or the menu to access the hard drive features

i have found a pause when it intialises the record ect.. about 6 seconds whether this is normal i don`t know cause i have only used the card not a harddrive. the information seems to be recorded for the time delay still on mine.

hope this helps !!

How're ye? just bought and set up a sv4. Plugged in a cheapo 8gb usb key and found that its recording grand but i'm not able to watch the program while doing so. The sound goes and the picture flickers. I'm guessing that its probably to do with the transfer rate from the usb key? anyone able to confirm that? could it be anything else? Thanks

If you do use a memory stick to record programs to transfer to your PCs hard disk you need to get a high speed memory stick!
An ordinary memory stick will cause the screen to stop/start when recording on the SV4. I have a Sandisk cruzer and it works great! The other advantage of the Hi speed memory stick is that you can transfer to your PCs HDD or a USB HDD attached to your PCs USB port, formatted in NTFS.
If, however, you use a HDD in your SV4 USB slot it must be formatted in FAT32.:hello:

Please help! My SV4 sometimes freezes when recording or paursing, any solutions. I have used both an external 3.5" hard drive and a flash stick. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Could be your on USB Hard disk is USB1 and not USB2.
also it is not unknown for the picture to disappear when recording on some versions of the Beta firmware, why not try ver 1.05 beta and see if it improves :)

I'm having problems with a 500GB external hard drive on starview 5 (technically identical to SV4) Am i best going for a smaller capacity? The hard drive is a Seagate with external power supply.
The box asks if i want to format, i click yes and the box just freezes!!!

Your SV4 will work fine with an external 500Gig USB HDD :)
