I know it's a bit of a bump, but...

If you have a USB com adapter, such as a Dearborn DPA 4/4Plus, or an actual Navistar/International IC4 interface (they are avaiable as serial and USB, the serial version has a blue case and the USB version has a black case), then all you have to do is make sure the drivers for your USB com adapter are installed, open up any of the three MD programs and go to...

File > MD Settings > COM Device and select whichever adapter you are using.

If the device you are using is available in several different connection types, such as serial, parallel, or USB, you will be asked to choose a connection type after you select the device in the first menu.

Unless you plan on reflashing/programming ECMs with NETs, you should be fine with any generic USB to serial adapter. I would not under any circumstances recommend using it to program/reflash.
