You can do a Remote Desktop Connection.

In win7 you can go to SatrtMenu - All programs - Accessories - Remote Desktop Connection.

There you can type the IP of the remote computer and type the user and password.

The remote computer should give you rights to connect.

You can use the software from
ShowMyPC: Remote Support, Desktop Sharing, Access Remote PC Free, Web Conferencing (http://www.showmypc.com)

He needs to run the program and give you the password shown on his PC, then you run the program and enter that pw... you are now connected to his PC from yours. It's the easiest way I found so far.

Hope that helps.

I think the remote desktop for windows xp is only available if you both have the professional version.
Windows 7 is ok
microsoft link here tells all you need to know if you have windows 7 on both machines
Remote Desktop Connection: frequently asked questions (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Remote-Desktop-Connection-frequently-asked-questions)

Otherwise I would useone of the others like logmein but you will need to set that up from his machine as it downloads a little bit of software if you do use logmein

oh wateva.. lol

anyway teamviewer wont let u login to his PC without his permission.. wat are the settings that u need to change? U can write a script to do them automatically and use a binder to send it to him.
