Hi,
Quick google search showed the step by step
How to remove keyboard from Toshiba Satellite A55 laptop. (http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/ToshibaA55/SatelliteA55_remove_keyboard.htm)
Should be ok to remove the cable as you described, you should be able to figure this out based on what the cable you have for the new keyboard looks like.

thanks for your reply, but i sorted prob out a few weeks ago used magnifying glass, two catches needed to be pulled back from either side of ribbon this raised clamp so allowing ribbon to be freed i used a toothpick no problem. ps sorry for not replying earlier.
