Hi guys...

Bit of a strange one.. I was logged on to an unsecure network in work when all of a sudden the wifi dropped... i tried to log on again but the router name had been changed to my friends name who i was chatting to on MSN.. Then after a couple of mins the router name changed to "You've Been Hacked" then after a few more it changed back to its original name but went from Unsecured to WPA...

What exactly happened and what did they see.. i was only chatting about footie so it wasnt that interesting but it was just strange.... could they have been able to access my laptop / files or firefox pages / passwords..??

Its not my router so i dont really care apart from the free wifi has disappeared...

cheers

Someone local used something like Backtrack 4 to access the router. They then changed the BSSID (name of the router) before encrypting the wifi & probably setting up a password on the router itself. The result is a router the owner cannot use for wifi. Unless they crack the WPA key with Aircrack or something similar. But that's very unlikely to happen.
If they have the installation disk then they can probably recover it.

Either that or the owner realised someone was accessing the internet via their router & encrypted it. It's unlikely you've been hacked, why would they kick you off the link? they need that to access your computer.

Some routers have logs on them, monitoring pages visited etc.
