i have just gone out and got me a onkyo tx-sr308 av receiver, will it be OK to connect my existing speakers to the receiver, the surround speakers are 4 ohms,
also will it make a difference if i get new speakers with bigger ohms?

the ohms is a measurement of the resistance of your speaker. your new amp should tell you a minimum value. ie 4ohms. this means you can use any speaker 4ohms or higher. if you use anything that give lower value ie wiring up two 4 ohm speakers in parallel (which gives 2 ohms) you are short circuiting your amp and it will not work for very long. its best to use speakers on or just above minimum value

its best to use the same ohm speakers and amp, becouse 4ohms want very high current so your 6ohm amp should be heat more

russian "hackers" used shielded twisted pair cat6 (STP-6 i guess) and got very good results in "blind comparison". of course it's not so good as top-models of the cables, but much better than cheap ones. sorry, can't find links right now, read this in FIDOnet which is dead now...
