Hi Guys , i need your expert advice please ...

A 1.4 VVTI Corolla came in for a radiator fan problem ( runs permanently after engine starts even if cold ) While measuring the relay contact points in fuse box the engine went on a slightly higher rev & after switching the motor off this does not start again .
It seems to be flooding as i smell petrol fumes but does not start . Today i kick started it in reverse gear after leaving car overnight . After it starts the revs are very high , it does not start even with a boost , only on a kickstart in reverse ?

The only fault code my T601 scanner shows is P0117 - Coolant Temp sensor low circuit input , which stays in memory even though MIL indicator status shows "off"
Once it showed " TPS Sensor " & " Cam Sensor " but i erased those .

Any ideas where to start ? Many thanks

Hello friend to prove to change sensor of temperature of water, also to check masses shared of sensors.

Hi , thanks for your reply . Would this cause the car to inject too much fuel ? It used to start perfectly when it came in ?

Faulty coolant temperature sensor.
What temperature do you read in live data?

Hi Oldford , thanks for youe reply . I did not check live readings , will do so today & post here

Hi Oldford

Just checked coolant temp now on live data , it reads -40 degrees celcius . Any ideas ?

Open circuit (connector loose, broken wires) or defective sensor.
Did you check with the engine running? I have seen stupid ecu's (even with OBD2/EOBD) that report -40 degrees C when the engine is off.

I havent tested with the motor running , but the sensor itself measures open circuit , absolutely no ohm reading on my multimeter both ways . I will try & get a loan sensor for testing , hopefully that works , will keep you posted , thx .

try putting a resistor in place and see if problem goes also check feeds as -40 is a default value

Or a sensor simulator would do the job,the -40 is the default setting on these for open curcuit.

If you have no ohms on the sensor, replace it because it's broken.

Thx guys , i thought of putting a resistor BUT what value should i use ?

A variable one. Higher resistance when the engine is cold, lower when its warm.
You can buy plug and play replacements from the dealer. All you have to do is screw the old one out and the new one int.

You can try 2 or 3K, but then the engine will be flooded when warm.
You can try 2 or 300 ohm, but then the engine wont fire up when cold.

i have a sensor simm myself but also have a few linear resistors to play with but as old ford says if temp sensors open circuit replace and job done
i was merely pointing out the fact of checking wiring and use of live data to help ya in future

100 Agree, just get new sensor, not expensive

Thx guys , much appreciated . No aftermarket sensors available now , local agents promised to have an original on Tuesday only, everyone in South Africa's too excited about the Soccer World Cup so not much work's getting done here . Thx , will keep u guys posted :proud:

Hi Guys , thx sooOOo much for all the info , after replacing sensor & clearing fault P0117 fan works when it should & car starts perfectly every time . Idling still seems slightly high to me but customer is very happy that the fan works normally & the car starts fine . Thx to everyone here , this is still the BEST auto forum around .
Another RESOLVED issue , thx again :D
