the other half has just got a P reg fiesta which is her first car, it has a problem which is getting worse. At lows rev, usually up to about 2,500 and in every gear it seems to not run smoothly, as you press the throttle it feels like its cutting out and then goes again, then cuts out, then goes again etc, like its being starved of fuel.
It feels to me as its either ignition related or a fuel line problem, thats only a guess though, could be well wide of the mark.
once it clears over about 2,500 then it runs fine.

can anybody shed any light on what this could be or what i can do to sort it?

cheers

if its a 1.25 16v it might be the coil pack

thanks for the reply
yeh sorry it is the 1.25 zetec engine. so do you reckon its likely to be that? is it basically a case of buying a new one and fitting it?

cant be a 100% m8 ... but its common and easy to change

sound, appreciate that mate, i was gonna check the plugs etc, fuel lines etc but it does feel more ignition related from my experience from racing (bit different than cars like but same principle i'm guessing!)

dont forget to let us know how u got on m8 .. helps others

its still might only be a lead or plug ,, but coils r more common

confirm air mass sensor,if values not correct could make this type of problem too.
Low quantity of fuel.
Try to press throtlle slowly and see if it runs without changes

also check fuel pressure is good as i got caught out with low pressure on one, fuel pumps are common on 4 yr old, fuel lines are handy to disconnect to check good flow, other related problems air pipe under inlet manifold split, and the other 3 plugs, leads and coil.

Has it got a sensor on exhaust (or exh manifold) had the same fault on a difrent car and it was a cracked exh manifold wich was giving a false reading ? when pulling away engine would stall as the crack opened ? so the fault could be caused by a bad exhaust joint?
Hope this helps (and makes sence?)

As M.H. says it could be the vehicle speed sensor, best way is to unplug it and drive the car, see if it improves the problem.
It's a 3 pin triangular plug on the the bulkhead behind the engine, gearbox side.
If that does not work, there is a problem with the throttle position sensor output, getting a corrupted signal from a multi plug, again at the back of the engine on the bulkhead.
Fords fix was to cut out the 3 wires from the multi-plug and join them externally.
All I do is find the output from the TPS which is the centre one on the 3 pin plug, on the TPS, use a multimeter to find which pin it goes to, and cut it both sides of the plug and socket, and rejoin using an extra piece of wire.
You must also remove the engine ECU fuse or disconnect the battery to allow the ECU to re-adapt itself.
This fault usually shows up, as the engine revving up between gear changes.
Hope you can understand what I mean, if you can't let me know.
