Paul Gascoigne has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

The former England footballer was detained following an incident at the Hilton Hotel in his hometown of Gateshead last night.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Police attended the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead yesterday evening after we received a report of concern for a 40-year-old man staying at the hotel. The man was detained under the Mental Health Act and no one was injured during the incident."

A Hilton Hotels representative said Gascoigne had been staying at the establishment for just a day and had not been seen making trouble.

She told the Guardian: "He checked in on Wednesday morning. The call actually came in from the police so it was not from the Hilton.

"There was nothing that happened at the hotel to make us think that there was anything wrong and once the police arrived that evening, he was escorted peacefully away. It's a very sensitive situation."

Gascoigne has been treated for stress, depression and alcohol addiction on several occasions during the last decade.

Last November, he was banned from boarding a plane in Malta because he was deemed to be too drunk. He had left rehab in Arizona the previous month.

Agreed, a spectacular talent gone to waste.

Sadly, more of a legend in the kebab shop than the football field.

& a wife beater! Aye true legend alright eh?

Actually i have just finished reading his autobiography, the updated version, which is the original one with new added chapters and all through he stated how he bitterly regretted what he did to his wife. It was a one off and he has never laid a hand on her since.

He also goes on to say that in the end he saw her for what she was, a money grabbing deceitful bitch. Yes he hit her but, give a dog a bad name..
I think it's a shame how he has ended up and i hope he comes through the other end ok. I have a friend who played alongside him towards the end of his career and he said he was a gentleman with a heart of gold who would do anything for anyone.

Everyone makes mistakes, it's not repeating them that show you have matured. Good luck to the man, i say

Don't you think his autobiography is going to be a wee bit biased (like they all are) towards him?

Whether are not he was a good footballer isn't questioned, a legand..well in my book you have to be truely ~~~~ing outstanding on the pitch or be an ambassador off it.

Whether he beat up his wife on one or more accasion is immaterial. He beat up a woman for ~~~~ sake. Did he say that he has nowt to do with his kids as well in that autobiography? Along with drink driving offences, and playing 'the sash' on more than one occasion whilst playing for Rangers (one of which was at Celtic Park). He's been an embarrassment for years. Turning up with a hamper for a Raoul Moat..

I'll tell you about how much of a gent he is. He used to come down to Sheffield quite a lot for a drink with Waddle, Palmer and co. They spent many an hour in a local on the outskirts. On a particular Sunday the gent and all round legend which is Gazza squated down in this quiet local pub in a pretty leafy suburb and had a sh*te on the floor. Now I'm sure this would lift him to legenary status with many :D, but a gentleman? No that isn't Gazza.

Well we all form our own opinions of people, and in answer to your questions, no he never said he wanted nowt to do with his kids ( even the ones that weren't his but he took responsibility for ) I never said he was a legend but i did say he was portrayed as a gent by someone who knew him very well. I suggest you read his book and his side of the story rather than that of the press. Like everything in life, everyone has different views and opinions of things. I'm not saying mine is right, just that is is mine, and i would believe the stories of a friend over that of the press who would write anything in order to sell papers

just a good hearted fool who let the world walk over him, top man who has a Sickness , if some one gets the big c , every one gets there sympathy , but some one gets a Mental Health problems and slaps his wife , then he gets a labeled as a ****er.
he needed help and i hope he got it!

Ronnie cueboy1 will go down the same way IMHO.

Gazza has had plenty of help already, but you have to truely want help and help yourself too.

Your probably right there m8, but from what i see, people think they're in control when the world and his dog know that's not the case. People like him think they are in control and don't need help,,,,, George Best ?

Aye agree with that Bulld0g. There are some paralles with Best as a man, but as a player I don't think Gazza was anywhere near the same league.

much as i do agree with what you say ops i can understand (to a certain extend) the demons in his head. he is a lot better off than us that he CAN afford the help he needs. i truly believe he needs someone to love him and that would bring him on leaps and bounds but trouble is who could put up with his behaviour.

he really is his own worst enemy unfortunately
