Amid the success Apple is currently enjoying with its iPod game releases, Microsoft has announced its move into the handheld gaming market via its Zune MP3 player.

During the firm's keynote speech at the Games Developers Conference, Microsoft said it was staking a claim in the handheld gaming space by making games development a possibility on Zune.

Microsoft's Chris Satchell demonstrated how to convert games between Zune, Xbox 360 and PC to a packed audience, saying games developed on PC could then be loaded onto its own formats.

The Zune music player, which features Wi-Fi functionality, is currently only available in the US and Microsoft has yet to announce if it will launch the system into the UK and other territories.
