A Nas drive (Network attached storage ) can be in a diiferent room attached to your router and it will show up on you pc. An external hard drive has to be connected directly to your pc via usb or firewire.

You can set it up so only the computers on your network you want can access it. Cool things you can do with a NAS drive | News | TechRadar UK (http://www.techradar.com/news/networking/routers-storage/cool-things-you-can-do-with-a-nas-drive-482552)
