having had both android and iphones they both have their own good and bad points, but to be honest if you want the best phone go for blackberry if you want the best gadget then go iphone.
The HTC desire is still said by most independant reviews to be the best phone out there at the moment.
But for me at the moment the Blackberry bold 9700 will blow the iphones away when it comes to speed and battery life.
Must admit im the same has you i totaly hate apple with everything on the iphone having to go through shitty itunes!!! if you do go down the iphone route seriously thing about getting it jailbroke.

It may be ?75 per month but think, the signal is so crap on the iPhone 4 you will not be able to make many calls and thus save a fortune!! :)

There's a new boy on the block.
Samsung Galaxy S (http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/hands-on-samsung-galaxy-s-review-697008)
It's an Android phone with a new Samsung 1Ghz processor that's way faster than the HTC Desire. I'm not knocking the Desire, I hold it as the best all-round phone available. But the Galaxy S has a dedicated Graphics Processor which boosts the CPU.
Before the Iphone fan boys jump up & state the Iphone has had this setup for years....Who do you think made the processors for them? Oh, yeah... Samsung.
The Blackberry's are great if you run an office or need a good business tool. But if you don't then you're not going to appreciate it fully.
A friend has a couple of small businesses & has used Blackberry for many years. He could be anywhere in the world, but through his phone he can see how many calls, call duration, login time & sales his office monkeys have clocked up...in real time. There's no escaping the evil eye.
But if you don't need this function, do you really need a Blackberry.
One piece of advice if you are leaning towards Blackberry. Stay above the 9000 model. The higher the number the better the phone, never go below 9000.

The 9700 bold will in addtion to running office things will do.....
Facebook app
IM App's inc facebook chat
good mp3 interface
will play Divx/Avi without any conversion!
MSN
Yahoo Messanger
Blackberry Messanger (free SMS to other BB Users)
Google maps
Sat Nav (ok it is crap)
Anyone can have a Blackberry and fully appreciate it.
For years i thought they were rubbish but not now, especially not the 9700.
Would recomend it to anyone.
But do agree about the curves, feel tacky and have less features.

I'm torn between the htc desire and the iphone 4. imho the desire beats the 3gs hands down but now that the 4 is here i'm not sure which way to go.

I know of one problem with the Desire, which is battery life. But this can be resolved by the user quite easily.
The list of problems with the Iphone seems to be growing daily. Add to that the updates are causing more problems with the phones than they're solving.
Had a customer in yesterday, he previously had an Iphone (granted an earlier version) but he was flashing around his new phone.....
On my recommendation he got the Desire. Would he ~~~~ shut up about how good it is.

anything made in korea avoid. just like their cars, garbage. But some valid points, the blackberry looks like crap and is the uncoolest phone in the world, no one ever boasts in the pub about owning one, however it does a great job as a phone and organizer and is pretty reliable. The iphone, well every 12 year old at school has got one cos they are the must have, but as a phone they suck, easy to damage, lots of faults and crashes regulary but plays ~~~~ really well...........oh ok the iphone it is:sheep:

I like HTC only because of the large keyboard.
