you could check in device manager and see if each core is working properly in properties, double click on processor it should show the three cores then click properties for each core.
the harder the pc works the more cores it will use.

Check out HWiNFO & HWiNFO32 - Hardware Information and Analysis Tools (http://www.hwinfo.com/) its a prety good app that will show you more detailed information about your machine than windows device manager will

You can also hit ALT/CTRL/DEL and go to the performance tab.. that will show you how all the cores are performing(each box represents a core.. or on a HT intel cpu a thread)

I heard them phenom x3's can be unlocked to Quads.. because that's what they really are(quad cores with a locked core)

I'm no expert mate, but you need one of them really good motherboards that does all that good stuff

I was gonna get that phenom x3 awhile back and was on youtube looking to see how it performed in games and stuff, and I seen a few tuts on how to unlock its 4th core

Check out youtube or google for some tutorials

A great tool for CPU-related info is called 'CPU-Z'. Tom's Hardware Guide use it in most of their CPU reviews. Hopefully that will give you some of the information you're looking for.

CpuZ is very good, it give you specs about processer aswell as bus speed & ram speed.

CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting (http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html)

Another good tool is speedfan it allow you to control fan speeds of fans connected to the motherboard manually

Download SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer (http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php)
