Linux is free, comes in various distro's.

Don't your sat box run Linux?

Try this one for PC Ubuntu homepage | Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/)

Have you used Mac OSX at all?

That is a Unix build, Linux is based on Unix.

Most Linux distro's are free.

It'll do everything that a Windows computer will do (and then some) but it's not as user friendly.

Linux is the operating system, not the the computer itself.

If you run a windows box, then install VMware, then do a virtual install of Ubuntu if you want to try it out without trashing your system.

Linux is pretty cool.

Alternative is to try with Live CD.

I suggest that you try to see it by installing either VMware like above recommended or by installing first Oracle Virtualbox and inside that virtualmachine to install Ubuntu and try it out.
In fact i have Ubuntu with a virtual machine running Windows XP...
