Hi there !!
I'v got a serial device connected to my laptop through a rs232 to usb cable. I really want to see what traffic is going to the device and vv. What should I use best: a rs232 or a usb sniffer ? Any recommendations for software in particular ?

Yes it is for gim;
do you have experience sniffing that device ?
why do you prefer rs232 above usb ?
any software you recommend ?

I tested this software too, but it isn't free. Trial works only 3 minutes and after instalation all serial drivers in my PC stopped working, but it should be some collision with other serial sniffing software.

Difficult and to much fuzz to make one yourself.
Just buy one; They range from 10 to 30 euro.
I got myself this one: Sitecom | Product | Cables | USB to serial Cable CN-104 (http://www.sitecom.com/USB-to-serial-Cable/CN-104/p/31)
Works like crazy just one minor: if you have installed several drivers that use virtual comport
or if you map the virtual comport to an existing real comport the driver's may collide
an reboot is sometimes neccessary.

try this
Smart Sniffer (http://smartsniff.com/)
At installation AVG virus checker found 4 infections.
I think they are false positives but for now I am not taking risk. Anyone who can scan the exe for me ?

I am using Free Serial Port Monitor Analyze Your Serial Port Communication Data. (http://www.serial-port-monitor.com/free-serial-port-monitor-product-details.html) It very stable tool. I am using it also in daily work in the office. Tested with many usb-rs232 converters.
Only have some problems with PCMCIA - RS232 cards.
As it come to HW I can recommend all converters base on FTDI chips.

Yep.... that's the one I've got installed right now; Works like a dream. Different views on the data. Very clear and educational.
FTDI chip rule in this field; Mostly used is FT232BL-chip.
Advantage: last drivers always downloadable at FTDI.

I prefer FTDI 232RL. It's supplied in better housing (for hand mounting) and requires less components. I use it in all of my projects.

You are right; I ment FTDI 232 without the last letters; Think those letters stand for the housing the chip is in;
"RL" must be smd package and is used in "in-cable" converters and I also came accross it in an ELM.

Here's a pretty good option. Serial Port Monitor (http://www.aggsoft.com/serial-port-monitor.htm). There's a demo period, which may be enough time to do what you want to do.
