I think they are as good as bought versions. most bought versions just include a bunch of extras like antispam and firewalls but you can get free versions of those that are better as well..

I use AVG free myself: AVG Antivirus and Security Software - Free Virus Protection | Protect your PC now! (http://free.avg.com/nl-en/homepage)
Good enough for me; All the "add-ons" in Norton makes your pc slow;
Whatever you choose: select "automatic update" !!

Just comes down to which ever one you like more.

Use Avast, along with Comodo Firewall (both free versions). Do NOT install the Antivirus part of Comodo. Low overhead, keeps most nasties out of your machine.

One of the big computer mags did a major survey a while back and found that Avast and AVG were better than paid for software.

They were also less liable to slow your computer down.

I've used AVAST for years and never had any problems.

Avast is great. I installed it for someone after finding a ton of malware on his computer. Apparently, its rated higher than AVG and Avira.

Be careful on which software you download for form fill-in. There was a popular spyware program years ago that did form fill-in while stealing private information.

I use since many years Avira AntiVir Personal (free) and has found the viruses coming in mails/internet. Sometimes I check the HD in other computers with premium antivirus softwares, but they did not find anything yet.
So seems that the free version also makes its job.

Avast is great.. The new AVG slows your PC down

Same reason why I switched back to AVast.

AVG tended to load slower on my laptop same with Norton.

I love AVG coz it is free and easy to switch off when try to get some crack working and so far no virus court upon me. I don't visit nude stuff but be honest if you get court on a really s***t site there is no antivirus which really able to protect you anyway.

I'm using a 3 year subscription to Norton Internet Security which I bought off ebay for only ?8 several months ago. Great no problems at all and it doesn't slow my laptop.

Try Microsoft Security Essentials - it's free, and in my experience seems a little faster than AVG. I switched to MSSE after AVG missed a virus on my machine.

+1 MSSE is free and has a low footprint ..excellent
Avg is the biggest pile of PC AV crap going ,along with Mcaffe and Norton...those users who
use it are totaly deluded..

I repair PC's for a living and find Avast 5, Malwarebytes, and spybot S&D will sort out most nasties out there. Comodo have a good free firewall.
Most AV software will cause problems if you install two or more on a PC, however the new Panda Cloud AV will run OK with Avast and most AV software plus it also is free. Plus it is very light on windows resources.:smokin:

I found Avast is very good, Get the odd false alert but i prefer it to be over sensitive then not. I used norton a while back and it takes over your computer, It seems you can never get rid of the program completely without format.

Used AVG free for years, starting getting full of extras. Now using avira, malwarebytes and ccleaner. avira more of a hassle to tell it to ignore some of the patch files that are not virus. But I like better then current AVG.

AVG is the best free virus software around. if you're going for this option you should also check out some free firewall software because having a firewall is essential for you're pc

I have used Avira Antivirus for 7 or 8 years now, excellent it is, updates every day, never ever had a problem with it, N:ciao:orton seems to be a pile of trouble, I had it many years ago and it slowed my PC to a crawl, then i discovered Avira, job done!!!
