Here it is OBD-ADS without GAL tested on E34, E36, E38, E39, E46, E60. Works perfect with inpa. DS2_1 and DS2_2 goes to ground to activate OBD , left unconected works as ADS

by the way, i dont think will ever work without gal.
The schematic interface with max232 can work on bmw over 1995 , but under this year especial e34 , e30, e32, never ever.
if you need to buy some real ads interface, good quality and cheap price, can find in Poland.

I use carsoft for models under 95 ,no live data no coding anyway you dont need anything more than carsoft . For gal programing you can use this home made programmer http://www.armory.com/~rstevew/Public/Pgmrs/GAL/_ClikMe1st.htm

I'm an newbie and have been trying to work out the differences for programming BMWs using a laptop.

What I have worked out so far is:
1) ADS is an expensive BMW optical interface.
2) OBD interface is a 'cheap' method but not as advanced, but is also standard for many cars. So that is what I am looking at as there are plenty on e-bay using INPA/EDIABAS.

Using OBDI - you can use BMW DIS for diagnostics and SSS to do programming. However many forums suggest 'NCS Expert' as a simple tool for making simple changes to default car settings. e.g. enabling/ disabling Day driving lights. Anything more ADS is the way.

It would be good if a cheap ADS method were available.

The type(s) of interface you need to choose, depends on the year(s) and model(s) of BMW you wish to programme. There are many different BMW interfaces (and clone versions), that will work with Ediabas. The most common are:
