Car is probably from before 2004?
Then it make sense. Diesels do not have to comply to the EOBD rules until 2004, so probably this car does not support the EOBD protocols and cannot be read with an Elm-interface.

my mistake its elm327 and the car is 2004. i was able to connect to the car a few months ago. it has failed the mot emmissions test (soot test) and i was hoping to identify whats causing the soot build up. i was hoping someone would have a simple solution.
thanks oldford for your reply.

Even when you can connect to the ecu, you're not going to see much data, wasn't defined in the standards in 2004. The most you will see is a couple of trouble codes.

Check voltage level in the 16-pin diagnostic connector.
Is this a ISO protocol? Then check pin 7.

Hit and miss with pre2004 as oldford has said, I find vagcom works best with the 'not fully compliant' peugeots.(your engine is peugeot 1.6?)

its a fiesta 1.4 tdci. i can see the lights flashing where its trying to communicate but it looks like its not obd2 compliant. any good interface to work with non compliant obds.
