The first effort is to get back what might be salvageable, start the pc up from scratch and keep hitting the F8 key, then you should se a list of commands as it boots up,scroll up to Best known configuration that works and high-light it and click enter,if that does not work get back to try something else, your anti virus and firewall should have picked up most things as many people have it scheduled to run daily by default.
Hope this is the same in Vista as XP..

The other option is go to > Run < from your Menu and enter this but make sure you have the original windows install Disk NOT an operating disk from a third party or manufacturer .
This will then ask you to enter your genuine windows disk which will then correct any known drivers that have been corrupted, repeat > Only use Windows Genuine Disk. <

sfc /scannow. (please note the spaces)

try starting in safe mode and scanning with your antivirus and see if it detects anything.

For a change I'm going to play the part of the pessimist.

Remove the hard drive & plug into another computer via a caddy. Full scan on antivirus & malware programes.

Also back up any files you don't want to lose.

Reinstall & run scans again. If you can't get it working correctly at this point I would look at full format & reinstall of the OS.

it's the password you set on your machine,
if you didnt set a pasword then what pc make / model is it?
they all have different ways to restore the os,

From what you say it looks as though the F8 repair settings have been password protected by some one, most times one can just hit enter a couple of times and it will let you in,and looking at your reply these nearly always come with the windows o/s installed when bought,in layman's terms its an image of windows o/s on a partition and supplied with it is an operating disk, some one else might correct me but thats my opinion, looks like Canker_Canison reply could be right.

Is it not possible to download some drivers for this model before you quit.
http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/downloads_gd.html

Desktop-Aspire-AspireM1610. Such as the VGA driver or what ever, dont know what graphic card you have but no harm could come of it to install drivers for it,just a thought ..

The only course left if not sorted, and there again depends what version of Disk you have.
1.Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD or VISTA CD into the computer (OEM Recovery Disks will probably not work) and reboot.
2.If / When prompted, press any key to boot from CD
3.In the next menu DO press R and enter the recovery console
4.Select the operating system you wish to recover
5.Enter the admin password when prompted and press ENTER
6.Once at the command prompt
(http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/#) type "bootcfg /rebuild" to start the rebuild process.
7.The rebuild process will take you through a number of steps
8.Once the tasks are complete type “exit” and reboot.
If so and you used an OEM cd, borrow a retail XP cd or Vista cd from a friend and try again using the retail XP cd or Vista cd. If you did indeed use a retail cd already then, as far as I know, a clean install is about all that is left.
