View Full Version : DM600s HDD issue
aftermath

Ive just got out my old dm600c and swapped the tuner for a sat one.
ive flashed the Pli 600 image.
the box has been working ok until today when i bought a Fujitsu 120 gb HDD, i installed the HDD but the box wont boot, it gets stuck on ( red and green lights ). If i take out the HDD it works fine.
Ive formatted it on my PC to fat32 and Ex2 and Ex3 and still the DM wont boot, i had it working on an old drive ( 30gig ) a year ago, but that went down.
The HDD works and is picked up on my PC.
Fist i thought maybe the ribbon cable could be damaged but i cant find them anywhere. ?
Is there a problem with Pli images and HDD ?
And is there an HDD compatibility list for DM600s ?

Is it a real Dreambox or Clone ?
If its a clone then there is a 50/50 chance a new tuner card will not work ! its down to the production where Chinese manufacturers sometimes cut corners on the system board trying to get a Failed tuner card to work, this ultimately means a New tuner card will not work if inserted because of the minuplation of the system board in the Factory.
If its an original Dreambox I would run a Blank Image ISO from Dreamup (Dream's Blank Image is Hard to find ) but it basiaclly wipes the entire Fash leaving nothing (Not a Track) then load a Image of your choice, that should work.
Lastly Check the Sat Tuner in another receiver, There could be a defect with the Card.
Hope it helps..

Dont think the Sat tuner would have anything to do with the box not booting with a Hard Disk installed...If it was the sat tuner, why does the box boot up and work fine with the Hard Disk disconencted..
Have you tried a different PSU ? maybe your PSU is not providing enouugh power to supply the reciever and the hard disk..
If you have a spare hard disk also try that incase it is a compatibility issue. Is there any jumpers on the hard disk ? Try setting to primary master if there is or leaving on cable select..

alun , the tuner works fine. The box wont boot if i insert the Hard Drive. The ribbon cable to The drive can only fit 1 way as it has the usual step in it where missing pins are to fit to. and i know there is no jumpers on which means it is set to a master.
i can try 2 things , maybe change the ribbon cable first as the cheap option.
2nd it will be a hard drive change. but i need to find out if there is any compatibility issues.
I have had Pli image Jade 3 on for about a year, it could be the image not picking up the HDD, i am sure i read Curious`s post about some issues with a certain Pli image ( that was a cable thread, but could be the same image ).
What image , if i need to change from Pli , would you recommend on a dm600s ?
@ gsmtech, ive tried 3 PSU`s all from different DM`s , all the same, i just need to try and get another HDD to try that .?

Sorry M8, I thought I might be some thing else Relating to when you switched the Tuners.
First make sure that boot from flash is enabled or delete recordings.epl from hdd/movie/ since it might be corrupted.
If that does not work:
Have you formatting the drive with a PC ? Even so I would using something like KillDisk if the HDD is coming out of something like another PC, Because Normally a PC creates a Tiny Partition 8-12k for Boot, Driver, System recognition etc, this usually does not show up if Formatting from Windows as it does not realy exist.
KILLDISK will wipe the disk Clean as it was the day you bought it.
Or the IDE cable is somehow damaged preventing it from Booting, other cases it can be the Image that is the Issue especially a Max Var one

I've used this (http://www.dreamboxtool.com/PLi-Images/PLi-Jade3-for-DM600-on-27-06-09.html) image on my 600 some time ago with no probs.Had a few HDD probs but on reflection I cant recall what exactly I did to fix.....try doing factory reset with the HDD installed then flash Pli with the drive in.

i had the same problem of sort a couple of months ago with my dm 600s pvr clone. the box would lock up as soon as it powered on after i installed a western digital 160gb hard drive. turns out i had the ide cable reversed. once i flipped the cable around it worked just fine, i also set the hard drive jumper to cable select as reccomended in the dreambox manual.

to easy ive figured it out thanks all you folks its to easy when you finaly get it.
anyway in point form here I go rookie at it as I am.
A) IDE/ATI 2.5 internall HD (mine is was 160 samsung)
B) Used the Pli dm600 current flash on box
C) once you get past all the rolling and sat config stuff
D) Install your HD do not use cable config per DM book
E) leave master, cable, slave jumper off of Hd it wants to be master.
F) plug you IDE/ATI cable into your HD 1 is with the red strip goes in directly to the right of the 4 pins used for selecting master, cable, slave last pin is 43.
H) Go to system settings chose harddisk setup and ok
I) Should come up with your HD eg. Samsung **** master 160gig and ok
J) here is where we all fall on our face because its a big secret ok on general settings and it will come up with a time box noted as 2 that is like in 2 minutes you need to change it to 30 then cursure over and change format speed to 160 save or back out
K) now format Hd and say yes it will do its thing to easy.
note: I finaly figured it out when I sat close to the box and it would time out at exactly 2 minutes lol
I found some other anomalies with this box while configing but thats for another time.
Its never a bad thing to have a little help.
