Hi,

I own a HTC Legend Android 2.1 based mobile phone. In order to get Ad-hoc wireless networking working I need to access some files on /system partition and edit them. /system partition is read-only by default and requires root access :(

Can root access be achieved without infamous 'rooting' of the device? I really do not want to open up my phone .. at least not yet :afraid:

Have to make your SD card into a 'gold card' then flash with a generic rom which allows superuser privaledges.

there's a guide on here: 24/May r4 - HTC Legend rooting guide - Now with 1.31.x - Android @ MoDaCo (http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-legend-legend-modaco-com/307487/24-may-r4-htc-legend-rooting-guide-now-with-1-31-x/)

I was afraid of that - the need to perform long process with a lot of possible pitfalls :damnmate:

Maybe I'll just wait for next firmware release and hope that it implements what I need.. :slug:

What features are you looking for? My HTC Desire got the 2.2 update last week. Let me know and I'll see if it is possible on my phone.

I was trying to enable adhoc wireless access that i had planned on using to get online via my notebook. I cant use master wifi mode on my notebook since the stupid card does not support it.. :banghead:

You mean Wi-Fi tether? i.e use your phones HSDPA/3G data connection and distribute it to use on your laptop via wi-fi?

On 2.2, you get Wi-Fi hotspot app, which does exactly this. Basically takes the 3G connection and turns phone into a wi-fi access point.

If it is not essential that you do it via wi-fi, you can use easy-tether app for phone and also the PC client, just plug your phone in via USB, and it shares your phones internet with the laptop.

Both work well.

I want it the other way around. That my laptop is an adhoc wifi access point and my mobile is adhoc client.

I need to use adhoc, 'cause my laptops wifi card does not support master mode that can turn it into regular wifi access point..

Ah, I see.

yeah, need to edit the 2 system files

/system/etc/wifi/tiwlan.ini
/data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf

Looks like you need to root.

Have a look at a PC prog calle Bzeek, I've not used it, but I've read/heard about it

Too bad I would need to root my device to modify two configs..

Bzeek runs under windoze so nogo for a tux user like me :hahaha:

Anyways, I've contacted HTC support and they told me that 2.2 update for Legend should be available in Q3 2010 - maybe there will be better support for Ad-hoc wireless under new firmware.. - Anyone already has the 2.2 FW and can check this ?

You can root your device and still keep your stock rom, nothing to be afraid of really.
