Registry cleaners are explained here.
How Best Do I Clean My Registry? - PCWorld (http://www.pcworld.com/article/153143/how_best_do_i_clean_my_registry.html)

I use CCleaner
CCleaner - Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner)

and Eusing free reg cleaner.
Eusing Free Registry Cleaner: Safely scan and repair registry problems - Spyware FREE. (http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm)

They both let you create backups before you start removing stuff so you can always put deleted items back if you have a problem.
Re the 'cracked' comment, I can't see there will be a problem.
As far as I know reg cleaners look for redundant entries not spyware/malware etc.

Hope this helps.

I used to use Reg Cleaners/ Reg Defrag.. and so on. If you have a high class PC you will not notice any change after cleaning your registry. - or at least that is in my case.

My bro uses 5yr old PC and he really appreciates such applications... the choice is yours depending on your expectations

Try the new Opera 10 browser mate it is extremely fast, excellent performance. Was a firefox fan but Opera has won me round.

Totally agree with not using IE I have not used it in years, so many issues with it and speeds just not acceptable.

The registry is a very important part of the operating system,so great care should be taken.Reg cleaners remove unused keys and values which probably slow down searching the registry but how often will you be doing that. Sometimes they will remove items that will affect the smooth running of your comp.To improve performance you would be better of removing any bloat, unused programmes etc, and to prevent them from starting up with the operating system.

Which you can easily do using the tools option in Ccleaner. :)

Ccleaner is a classic and i also use it, its a safe well developed basic program..
Another one i use is TweakNow PowerPack which is free here.
TweakNow PowerPack 2011 v4.0.0 Download - Freeware Files.com - Utilities Category (http://www.freewarefiles.com/TweakNow-PowerPack_program_49457.html)

It has tons of options to play with but also has one of the best registry cleaners available.
What impressed me was the default settings were good, some other alternatives cancel out any performance gain by pinning themselves to your start menu or running auto scans just when your in the middle of a project.
I hate when a free version does a scan and fixes some of the problems but then reminds you that it could do a lot more if you upgrade, Advanced System Care was bad for this, it claimed at one point it could increase your performance by 300%,, really, they must have some coders in China..

Tweak Now has other features which are unrestricted as it has no premium version.
It has all the usual stuff, reg cleaner, disc cleaner, start menu options, ram optimizer, defragmenter and a lot of other handy tweaks like, menu delay time, shut programs down quicker, network settings, system troubleshooter and lots more..

Its worth a go..

if it still works, give it a go

EDIT - i just used CCleaner, and feel like a dumbass for not knowing about this tool for years now. It's great. thanks all for the recommendation
