HP has many problems with the nvidia video cards, this is probably your problem.
solutions are two
BGA reflow ("cheap")
BGA reballing
reflow can do it alone

The HP dv series are the most common laptops with this problem. There are videos on utube where people have tried these diy solutions. I tried heating up the graphics card with a pen torch on a HP dv6000 which had the same problem. Worked for a couple of months then had the same problem. Replace the motherboard from ebay. I used copper sheet between the heatsink and graphics card, made about 4 holes on the plastic bottom cover near the graphics card and now its been ok for around 4 months. I mostly always put it on a cooling fan and on a table not on my lap!

I think some of the motherboards may have the nvidia and some the ATi chipset. You might have to check the specific laptop to see which it has. I think the later ones had the ATi chipset. The DV6000 series HP laptops had the issue not just because of the nvidia graphics chip but it was also because of the design which caused the overheating so ATi chipset may also be affected if the laptops get too hot

Your best option at this point would be to purchase a used, tested motherboard off of eBay (or another source). Since you can purchase a good, quality laptop for around $500 USD, it might not be worth the effort.
Or if you just use it for Internet, email, word docs, etc... Just get a netbook for around $150 USD.
