hi , i have a draper one , never lets me down , but only shows if the remote is transmitting , it turns itself off automatically too.
i also have one from advanced diagnostics which also tests the immo coil , the only fault with it for me is , the battery is always flat because i never switch it off as i am used to the draper , not a fault of AD , still , it pisses me off every time i try to use it

here to check remote cost $100.00 usa made in china.you can make your own coil tester (need coil and led and a cap). you can make your own with no power source.it works like a magnet, the ariel power up and your side with the coil will pull and light up the led.(easy design)

I agree the AD35 meets all your requirements mate .
Also agree that i leave the tester on and run the battery out too.
There approx ?75 in the Uk .

+1 for the unit ray-ray posted, mine works well and it can also clone non rolling remotes. They still update the machine too.
Can you show me a picture of the coil tester?
I have ZERO understanding of electrical principles unfortunately and have to see pictures.

So let me get this right, I have a coil of wire with the two ends free. I join wire end 1 to leg 1 of the LED, leg 2 gets connected to leg 1 of the capacitor and leg 2 of the capacitor gets joined to wire end 2?
I hope my amateurish drawing does not offend any of you hard core electrical nerds!

you got it and battery less (works like a magnet,it power up the led).just try to figure out how many turns of wire you need to get a good "Q" factor.put your cap to get it into range 134.2khz.i'll show you mine ,key chain design.

Thanks ray-ray. You may have to dumb this down for me, I have no idea what a "Q" factor is or how to get a cap range of 134.2khz!
Can you do me a closeup of your one please.
What sot of cap should I use, they come in a lot of different sizes I think.
I was also going to use an arial off an old ad900 I had laying around.

a chrysler rhk has cap and coil ,for a mini (key chain).you can use the ariel off a chrysler to fit around the ignation.(slip over the ford ears and other makes)."Q" factor antenas strength not range.

I found this, this is what we are talking about right?
YouTube - Wireless Power Transfer Project
I can't see the cap in this guys leds, just the coil.
How do you know how many turns of wire you have to do over the steel bobbin as i'm guessing this is the "Q" factor?
How do you measure the "Q" factor?
Q = Qe (1 + Cd/C)
where Cd = Distributed capacitance
and C = Tuning Capacitance
Is kicking my arse!

if no cap it will work but open field your cell phone might set it off or anything in that open range .

i have a cheap solution, I use a min frequency counter for testing & tuning, only about 60-70 bucks worth just place the remote on top and press the button & it comes up with a frequency reading.
and another unit that gives me a weak, ok, strong reading, between the 2 i can test most.
and the mobile phone trick for infra-reds.
I can post some pics if anyone in interested.
and as far as the coil testing, I usually just do a resistance check, have tried scoping them too

Just for reference an aftermarket transponder immoboliser has a rating of "2.3 Gnomes":roflmao: Tried out of curisoty with a 10nf cap and a 100uf cap - nil poi.
What might work is an INDUCTIVE abs sensor, with said cap and led on it.
As these have like 1000000000 miles of wire OR the transponder pickup off a reno megraine or something.
There is an unconfirmed rumor going around Meat-City that about 11/12 years ago some dumb~~~~ body worker damaged a transponder loop
on a BRAND NEW Reno - accident damaged, fitting new hair-bag.
The one and only cure was to roll out the wire approx 20 meters, re wind it, resolder, cross fingers, kick some dumbasses arse
This might be a good thing as well.
coulsd do with some metal in it as well??!!

When I test them I use a scope to measure the output signal of the coil. It will pulse for about a 1/4 of a second with what is similar to a sine wave pattern

Appoligises for being so DENSE and forgetting to mention this:-
THIS MIGHT NOT WORK, BEFORE YOU WINGE
Just a thought, not sure about other members eg Fallen in Austraila
but next time you are out on the pish, take a few black dustbin bags with you, grab a few of the solar powered garden lights that Polish peole have just look for the LARGE satalite dishs.
Open them up, and you will see a 'green resistor' this is called an inductor, NOT a resitor, never smashed one open, but it's a coil of wire, try experimenting, with them, see if you antenna loop, abs sensor etc, and/or with/without, see if it makes a differqance to the brightness of the led. Near a working transponder loop, take note of model/year of car
DO NOT look directly into the beam of led as word on street is that they damage your eyes

Tried to make one today. Made the loop about 15mm accross, did about 30 turns of .3 copper wire, soldered a LED in and it didn't work! The copper wire was coated (except for the 2 ends).
I then soldered the LED onto an old ad900 loop I had spare, and it worked. the loop was egg shaped and sized.
I'm guessing 15mm was too small?

Just a quick one JimmyQ .
Does yours make a beep when you fire a key at it or just freq display.
Also when you toggle on/off switch on ign is it just a beep or do you get a indicator on the display also .
I think the instructions are a bit out of it???.

hi mate if you put the key near the bottom right hand corner it shows you the frequency once you press the button on the remote
it only beeps when you place the top left near the ignition and turn the key to tell you the coil is ok thats about it really mate :)

Ok, I gave up making one and used an Astra ignition ariel, works like a charm.
When you test it on an ignition, press the reader right up against the car ignition and pass the key through the centre of the ring.
If it's the right key it will flash briefly.
If it's the wrong key, it will continue to flash.
Tested this on a Toyota.

.
I is assuming when you say 'astra' as in vauxhall/opel - or some aussie crap?
Just a though and for reference
What we do at M-H-M is every time a car comes in that we are struggling
with - can't find fault, can't get bits etc.
What we do is wait untill another model the same comes, in, flick the transponder out the key, superglue to the backside of the barrell.
We did have a wipermotor on a cutting rig that we gained out of a puncar-park - but easy come, easy go, we left in a pub car park!
So we just go to the local market and get the key duplicated onto a metal blank.
Ask the punter of the second car for name/address and that solves the problem of parts for the first car.
BUT we have NOT managed to do this with a BMW yet - chip has to be
on the 'inside' of the transponder loop

You guys have Astra's, we have Astra's.
Yours are made by Opel, ours are still made by Opel but we had the great idea to pull off the Opel badge and stick on a Holden Badge (apparently this makes the car handle better).
Have you had the pleasure of working on a HOLDEN Monaro yet MH?
How dare you pull off our badge and put a Vauxhall badge on it!
And then you go and improve it with your superchargery witchcraft.

YUCK any on them 'super cars' are bags of crap, you can't see what your crashing into, you can't see where you have been, they all could do with a 'crawler gear' - mainley for kerb crawing, but also to give it some control, for parking etc.
