hi im trying to sort an ibm t23 laptop, for my girlfriends brother, ive sorted everything else on it but theres one thing that still eludes me
evry now and then randomly the laptop turns off, no warning no signs just straight off
the battery does hold a charge and even when plugged in it still does it
i know its an old machine but was working fine a few weeks ago when i gave it to him now he says its doin this any ideas guys??

Hi, seems like the fan cooler is not working properly, try loading the bios and watch the processor temperature. may be you will need to replace the fan.

may be a virus, may be a driver conflict, it may be hardware going down,
does it blue screen before it goes off?
does it do the same thing in safe mode?
have you tried any spy-ware / malware / virus scan's?
has he recently updated any drivers on it?

right well thanks for advice guys i have now discovered that its cutting out due to overheating but.... the fan runs in bios no problem, but when i load windows the fan stops spinning altogether i know its not a virus or malware as it was doing it while trying to install xp..

might be best to get it opened and clean the fan out. you'l be surprised how much dust gathers there

thanks all for advice realised now must be a faulty temp sensor on board or something as i can control the fan manually via windows with an app
