Morning,

A while ago i Jail broke my ifail touch using jailbreakme.com. I THOUGHT that i had selected the option to let Cydia take control of the apple firmware, however it turns out that i didn't.

i've since plugged my ipod into the pc and upgraded firmware to 4.0.2, and now have a fully restored to apple spec touch. I've been looking on youtube at various videos which claim to be able to downgrade the firmware, however on downloading said firmware files, itunes does not recognise them as being firmware versions as there is now .ipsw file extension in there. I've modified the files to be .ipsw files, but then itunes does not recognise it as being a compatible firmware revision?

any of you got any ideas?

What I touch you using? Use greenpois0n to jailbreak any firmware version (if it disentangle work for you upgrade to 4.1 and use it then)

Its a 3rd Generation, I've downloaded the greenpois0n, and that seems to put it into restore mode, however when i try to point the ipod into the direction of the lower firmware that i've downloaded it stil won't recognise them as there still aren't any .ipsw files contained in the directory

I agree, make life easy for yourself upgrade to 4.1 and jailbreak with either greenpois0n or limera1n job done.

thanks for this, the touch is now on OS 4.1

perhaps i'm being really dense.. BUT i've ran greenpois0n and it puts the touch into DFU mode iTunes does a full restore on it.

I've downloaded and run limera1n. i get this

http://www.ihackintosh.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/limera1n1_thumb2.png
then
http://www.ihackintosh.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/limera1n2_thumb2.png
then
http://www.ihackintosh.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/limera1n3_thumb2.png
then
http://www.ihackintosh.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/limera1n_4_thumb1.png
then
http://www.ihackintosh.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/limera1n_5_thumb1.png
finally............
http://www.ihackintosh.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/limera1n_6_thumb1.png

which makes me think- superb, it done..... however when i fire the ifail up again, its there in standard OS4.1 form with no option of the winterboard or any evidence that there is anything to do with a limera1n app!

Ok if you have JB before then your SHSH blobs should be saved on the cydia server. If this is correct then you can downgrade to any previous FW revision that you have the SHSH blobs saved for.

Many of you asked for it and so here is the detailed guide on how to downgrade your iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G and iPod touch 2G / 3G running iOS 4.0.2 to iOS 4.0.1 / 4.0 / 3.1.3 / 3.1.2. The following step by step guide will help you rollback / downgrade to iOS 4.0.1 / iOS 4, iPhone 3.1.3 and 3.1.2 from iOS 4.0.2 as long as you have SHSH blobs saved for the respective firmwares for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G and iPod touches.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z39/biffo1/untitled-17.jpg

Step 1: Download the required old ipsw firmware files. (iOS 4.0.1, iOS 4, 3.1.3, 3.1.2)

Step 2: Put your device into DFU mode (not recovery mode).
Connect your iPhone to your computer.
Turn iPhone off.
Start iTunes.
Hold Power and Home buttons together for 10 seconds or so.
Release Power button but keep holding the Home button until your computer recognizes a new USB device.
iTunes will now recognize your iPhone.

Note: Your iPhone screen at this time should be blank (black in color), if not, then you are most likely in Recovery Mode, not DFU mode.

(Step 3 is for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 3G and 2G (MC Model) users only. If you are on iPhone 3G or iPod touch 2G (non-MC model), skip Step 3 and continue from Step 4)

Step 3: This step is applicable to iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 3G and iPod touch 2G(MC model) which have their SHSH blobs (ECID SHSH) saved on Cydia for the firmware you downgrading on. If you don?t have your SHSH files saved, you cannot downgrade the mentioned devices.

So what we will do is to trick iTunes into thinking that it is watching Apple servers, while in real, we are going to change the address to Saurik?s server.
Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\ and locate ?hosts? file.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z39/biffo1/untitled2-4.jpg

Open this ?hosts? file in Notepad (for Windows) or TextEdit (for Mac OS X) and add this
74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com

line as shown in the screenshot below:

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z39/biffo1/untitled4-3.jpg

Now simply save this file and you are good to go!

NOTE for Windows 7 and Vista: Start ?Notepad? with Administrator privileges by right clicking on ?Notepad? app, and click on ?Run as Administrator? option.

Step 4: You will now have to restore your iPhone or iPod touch to the firmware you downloaded in Step 1. Click on your phone icon from the sidebar in iTunes. Now press and hold left ?alt? (option) button on Mac (Left ?Shift? button on Windows) on the keyboard and then click on ?Restore? (Not ?Update? or ?Check for Update?) button in the iTunes and then release this button.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z39/biffo1/untitled5-3.jpg

This will make iTunes prompt you to select the location for your downloaded firmware file. Select that ipsw file and click on ?Open?.

Step 5: Now sit back and enjoy as iTunes does the rest for you. This will involve a series of automated steps. Be patient at this stage and don?t do anything silly. Just wait while iTunes installs firmware on your iPhone or iPod touch. Your iPhone screen at this point will be showing a progress bar indicating installation progress. Now at some point, iTunes will throw 1011, 1013 or 1015 error at you. This is normal, just ignore this error as the firmware has already been successfully installed on the device.

Step 6: Now you will need to exit your device from Recovery Mode. To do this, download a program called RecBoot (Windows / Mac) from here. Run it and the click on ?Exit Recovery Mode? button. Your device will now restart normally.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z39/biffo1/untitled6.jpg

This is it, you should now be able to jailbreak and unlock your device on any of the mentioned OS?.

For iPhone 3.1.2 firmware, you can use blackra1n, PwnageTool, redsn0w, sn0wbreeze, ultrasn0w and blacksn0w to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone and iPod touch. For iPhone 3.1.3 firmware for iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS and iPod touch 1G/2G, you can use redsn0w 0.9.3, redsn0w 0.9.4, sn0wbreeze, PwnageTool 3.1.5. Unlocking can be done using ultrasn0w or blacksn0w. iPhone 3.1.3 (on devices with new bootrom and baseband) can use Spirit to jailbreak iPhone 3GS/3G and iPod touch 3G/2G.

You sure you have downloaded the right version for the phone? Eg 2g/3g/3gs?

Positive, I even downloaded 2g and 3g just to be on the safe side

the only file extensions in the folders are...
.plist
.n72
.dmg
.dfu
.img3

itunes will not recognise any of these and only wants .ipsw

I even tried changing the .zip extension to .ipsw with no joy

will it make any diference that my itunes is version 10.0.1.22?

iH8sn0w.com | Jailbreak your iPod touches and iPhones (http://ih8sn0w.com/index.php/welcome.snow)
Use f0cast to determine exactly what idevice your using...as the 2g and 3g touch are hard to tell apart.

thanks for that, it turns out its a g2, and its model is MC086 but that still doesn't explain why when i open the firmware file for the g2, there is no .ipsw file in there!

I dont know what your downloading, but I have checked this file and its an ipsw. Its the 2g version for a touch, and its 3.1.2.

MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OYX1RLXG&f=iPod2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw)

I have downloaded the file myself, and can confirm its an IPSW.

I've managed to get it cracked, Fijiman posted a link to the same greenpois0n that i downloaded on sunday, i figured that it couldn't hurt to give it another try and it worked just fine

sounds like windows is seeing as a zip file
you need to go to folder options view and uncheck
hide extensions for known file types
see pic
then right click and delete .zip from the file name
