View Full Version : VW Golf GL Mk3 Startup problems

Hello
My car: VW Golf GL Mk3 1996. 70k mileage. ADZ 66kwEngine.

From cold (overnight or several hours standing) starts fine, first time always, (1100rpm) but after short while (varies 20secs - 80secs or more) revs suddenly race to 2000/3000 for short while, then flickers jerkily up and down til coughs and splutters and cuts out.

If I can get it to normal running temp, it (usually!)behaves perfectly and idles and runs trouble-free.

Restarting from warm is (usually - just one exception so far) ok.

Dampness/temperature seem to play no part.

No expert at all, but have cleaned plugs, distributor cap/points; cleaned, reseated earth connections; removed and cleaned Throttle body.

From symptoms above is there anything I could look at as possible culprit? (I have no manual, and little knowledge, so clear descriptions, link to diagrams would be apppreciated).

Apologies for lengthy post.

Hi

The high lighted point to be noted.............After Cleaning the throttle body did you carry out the Basic Settings ???.

If NOT than look for some body who has Vag-Com Tool or, any suitable Tool which can carry out this task for Basic Settings.

Hopefully this should sort your problem.

Hope this helps.

Ash

Check the temp sensor, I had a Seat doing similar the other day, vag-commed it and temp sensor was telling ecu it was minus -45, stuck a new one in and all sorted

Dampness/temperature seem to play no part.

/points; cleaned,

:goodpost: points cleaned lol

DEFANTLY stick new temp sender in. Also suggest when mucking around try removing oil cap, check breather to crankcase is not blocked.

Might be borderline age if has sideward-facing-foo-foo-valve.
try bttery off then ignition on no start 1 min

Many thanks to all. (Sorry for delay ,been sick)

One important thing I forgot to mention: this problem is intermittent. Sometimes it will start fine and get to warm without problem (maybe just one brief, small surge) and then run faultlessly.

Ashraf: What in Basic Settings would i be looking for? I have just got VCDS-Lite and 3rd party cable: is that of any use here. (I thought no resetting of throttle body was necessary for this model/age)?

LiteAce and Meat-head...
You both think the temp sensor is possible fault. Would that be so, when the problem is inconsistent - sometimes fine sometimes not?
Just got copy of Haynes manual from Library. It says "air intake temperature sensor is an integral part of the injector retaining cap". So do i need a whole new injector?

The breather to crankcase I shall check.

Sorry my woeful lack of experience means such ignorant questions.

Look for coolent temp sensor, not air intke temp sensor, its in the plastic hose to block connector under distributor \ coil pack

Ok. Found it. Thanks again.
But once again it started, warmed up and ran perfectly ok this morning. Would a faulty coolant temp sensor sometimes fail and sometimes not?
This is the problem with the no-start happening so intermitently, for no obvious reason - it's hard to know if any changes i make are having any effect.

problem is with electronics anything that is mass produced can sometimes fail and sometimes not or it could be a connection problem but you've got to find it, thats where the nightmare starts, you need a wiring diagram and start checking all the earths first

The parent company of M-H-M had a MKIII Gulf in, short story was >ONLY< and >ONLY< was the word, for the first mile in the morning it would jump around, any other time fine.

It went to the ENTIRE world before it came to M-H-M Parent Company
It had >EVERYTHING< changed, ecu, coil, dissy, ash tray emptied, new hydrogen tanks, fuel pump, ignition switch, new furry dice. You name it, it had one fitted - all new O/E parts.

TOOK MONTHS to find it. M-H-M parent company sussed it by a chance phone call to the stealer who changed everything. Just checking what they had done.

Turned out the EC relay had a dry biffa in it. Re blobbed it, BIG bill and away. Lots of parts on ebay thank you very much

Meat im shocked Mate, the 1st thing you should have changed is the famous sideward facing foo-foo valve, not even a mention of it this time.

Okay, I was getting really cheered by the thought that replacing this ECU Relay was going to be it, only to find there is no ECU Relay to replace...

I could see only 6 slots with 4 relays: Blank/99/36/Blank/53/167.

And then Google found another forum where guy was told by VW Dealer there is no ECU Relay for ADZ model.

So many avenues turning into blind alleys - depressing...
