Hi, i got an Audi TT with overheating problem. I was certain there was a problem with the thermostat. I changed the thermostat but the problem is still there. I read somewhere else that it can be a faulty dash showing incorrect temperature reading. I think its the dash as when the car overheats, i dont see any visible changes under the hood. If someone has had similar experiences with Audi TT, pls let me know of other solutions or things i should consider before repairing it. I work at a garage. My other question is if the dash is faulty, can i only change the temperature gauge or i'll hav to replace the whole dash. Thanx

Check the resistance of the temp sensor and then check with the gauge, maybe a problem with the plastic water pump impeller, they fall off

You can read out engine temperature with a generic EOBD/OBD2 scanner or VCDS to see if the engine overheats or not. Or use a infrared thermometer?
Before changing the dash I would replace the sensor for the dash, less work and a lot cheaper.

Could you please explain where the dash sensor is located. Thanx

The sensor for the dash temp gauge is on the engine, don't know exactly where BUT normally on vags its in the plastic thermo housing, should be a 4 pin sensor with square plug

Seconded for the water pump impeller; I've done a few of these myself. I keep an IR thermometer in my tool box for checking things like this :)

there is a secret menu on heater controls that will read out temp of engine speed rpm etc. do a google or i have it on my otheer laptop so can post later, pump do have probs but usually sat in traffic, clocks also common prob but do secret menu first to see if ecu is seeing same temp as clocks reading as they are pricey and should only be changed if certain they are faulty, regards steve

update
press and hold recirculate and up on heater controls
use temp to select mode 49 for temp deg c.
press recirc to enter
temp will be shown on heater display.
if this shows hot look at pump or temp sensor. if this shows normal but dash shows high could be faulty dash or wiring, regards steve

A failed water pump is a definite possibility as already mentioned twice. Check if the coolant is circulating properly.
An infrared thermometer would be ideal but you could also, very carefully, feel all the coolant hoses in the engine bay, with the heater set to max, and see if they are all hot.
If they get cooler the farther you move away from the engine, a failed pump might well be the problem.

you could take one of the thinner hoses off, then put a brick on gas pedal - see if/how far it can pump scolding hot water.

I had a vw golf r32 with over heating problems a couple of weeks ago. Did all the obvious things like thermostat and checked the water pump. Ended up it was the cap off the expansion tank. ?7 and cured the problem. Always check obvious things first as i learnt.

in that case KOP - cap should go HISSSSS when removed - when hot

If the engine is overheating the cooling fans will stay on - or not come on at all - which would cause the overheat problem, if not coming on check connection on fuse near battery that powers fans

if water pump is working you should see water flowing into bottle by the small pipe,no movement pump dodgy.

yeah, spraying folks with hot antifreeze is more fun.

dash pod on tts are prone to problems last one i sent away cost 200 to repair, what engine is in this, 1.8t if so its already bn said but wait for thermostat to open and make sure you got coolant returning to the bottle via the small pipe if not water pump failed, and make sure the fans etc are coming on, if you got the gear check the engine temp in parameters through dignostic gear

hi , had the same problem with mine , proved to be the gauge in clocks, paid ?100 to have it repaired, still cheaper than buying a new set at the cost of ?736 + vat plus exchange by audi.
common problem, by the way not worth buying second hand, did that also and got ripped off, the petrol gauge didnot work..
