In My opinion You should have more than one tool. All depends how far You want to go. If only for diagnostics, then there are loads of multibrand scanners. First of all You should understand - one tool can't do all jobs and written below is my own suggestions. For European market cars I would prefer Bosch KTS, for Asian market cars Carmanscan or Launch, but this is only for diagnostics.
This all depends from how much money You can spend on tools.
Of course there are cheaper tools on the market, but anyway In longer time they will pay back what they cost. I don't think there is a separate tool for diesel and petrol engines.
I don't now much about lorries diagnostics. Have tried couple times on lorries KTS540 with success, but that not my field.
