The Antivirus software available today assumes dual core CPU's and SATA disks so if you're still (like me) on a single core system you'll find the AVG will slow your machine down.

Keep regular scans but switch off resident sheild and you'll see your 'puter go back to full speed

If you want to speed up your PC you need to reduce the number of applications that auto start at boot time. To do this click start and then run, type msconfig and press enter.
Next click the startup tab and go through the list unticking those that are not needed. If you're not sure what each one is then google them.
Don't worry too much if you untick one thats needed as they can always be reticked.
Also your antivirus may be slowing things down. Maybe you should change it to something lightweight, ie. AVG (AVG Free - Download antivirus and antispyware software for Windows XP and Vista (http://free.avg.com))
The next thing you should do is check for any infections that your current antivirus has missed, I highly recommend you try Malwarebytes.org (http://www.malwarebytes.org). Even if your PC isn't running slowly.
And of course the best thing you can do to increase the speed of your PC is add more RAM.

Personally I use Ubuntu Linux and don't really suffer with speed issues but I do spend my waking hours repairing PC's for a living.

Good luck!

I agree with 'hippy1970'. Also I've found, 'SmartDefrag', pretty good, Autoruns and you can exit it if you want. Does a deep optimize too. Manually defrag before shuting down each time. Can't beat a clean reinstall of the Operating System though.
