View Full Version : EWS in Z3 1999 - tampering protection

Hi All,
Friend of mine got himself this car to have some fun but instead got himself a headache.
Car worked for two weeks and now won't start. It does crank but doesn't start.
Scanned with DIS, DME showes that EWS is reporting "tampering protection" problem. EWS can't be accessed directly for diagnosis (doesn't even responds for quick test - just "!") but I can see it's identification in "control unit functions". I assume that EWS is in working condition just blocked.
Read 0J46D and it can be read/write fine.
The only question is how can I rectify the problem.
Car is 25 miles away and I don't really want to go back and forth just to try some things.
Got ECU out the car as well.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Should I try and reset EWS to factory settings in EWS Editor and then try to program it in with DIS? In this case I assume that I don't touch the DME. Did anyone tried that before? Did it work?

I wouldn't post that before reading (I'd say) all post with EWS word in it.
The only thing is I'd like to have an input from people who had same problem (specific fault).
maybe there is a deifinate solution to my problem avoiding me travelling many times to try bit and bobs.
As you know wheather in UK is not too good to drive in countryside roads (despite having winter tyres fitted). Not afraid of snow or frost it's just people on the road make it difficult driving 10-15mph. Takes me ages to go 25miles to work every day.... Crazy!!

Your EWS have invalid odometer value.
Odometer value 16777215, correct range is 0-999990
Try this data, use old key.
pass in pm.

Damn!!! I haven't noticed that!!! So obvious now. That's the reason for EWS to throw up tampering error.
Just looked in the file and noticed that you have made my keys unused. This did not work for me in the past. The only time i got old keys working with rolling codes reset, was when i unticked and ticked back the "unused" box.
Can anyone confirm that? I think "unused" is only for brand new keys.

Why not also make new transponder using one of the key no,s thats never been used, using zed bull gambit etc, seeing as the car is 25 miles away. Because if the mileage part of the dump as got corrupt who says a key hasnt?? But has your car cranked that does really say EWS is recognising key as on these starter circuit is also immobilised. Id take some BMW stuff capable of aligning EWS and DME also, just incase its gone out.
If you still have no communication after using dump posted by bram380, check to see if elmos ic is getting hot on pcb, as these are prown to fail and corrupt dump. Hopefully you wont need to m8.

ELMOS 10029A for use in BMW EWS3 (http://www.codecard.lt/electronics/car-electronic-repair-parts/elmos-10029a-for-use-in-bmw-ews3/prod_132.html)
Thanks for advise.
The only problem with transponder is that i haven't got any at the moment. Will take a chance to try it with milage corrected.
As for diags, i've got OPS so I'm backed up on this.
I'll keep you posted how it went when i get there....

Ive hear EWS loosing programming of keys days or weeks after programming a key. In fact I've seen it myself in a car that I worked on. M3. I really don't know what causes it. But the BMW M3 lost it's programming twice in a month. The locksmith was clueless.

I have checked it and it gets sightly warm nothing like hot or burning.
I was suspecting it as I've tried to flash it with xprog-m and it wouldn't connect.
We'll see if EWS3D can be done with xprog-m when second box arrives.
I'll keep you posted.
