kia sportage 2.0d failed emission test

Hi All, me old man unfortunately has a 99 Kia spaortage 2.0 TD, today its failed its MOT on emissions, does anyone have any info on these shite cars, non of what I have, AD, TD or ESi has anything, would like to know what system they have on them

I always remove the air filter before the test, it a 20TD 4x4 ?

Its sorted, gave it a blast up the motorway, took it back for re-test and it passed. When tested the 1st time it was 5.3 after blast 1.7, I told me old man to every now and again drive it like he nicked it he said "what" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
