un plug the connector on transmission that goes to valve body, see if transmission goes in failsafe 3 gear , if so then try a new gearbx module .

check for default 3rd gear, then pin out from E C U in particular the two shift solenoids & speed sensor and poss range switch . if all ok then go for E C U

worth, jacking. back end up, look at the diff, speed sensor, worth getting an air chesiel
and smash it off - that way, you can say hand on heart to customer it is faulty.

does the speedo work?

This one should cover E46 . 4sp GM .these are quick pin out charts we wrote in Excel ,the books are far to big & clumsy when you are working under the dash / hood . the reason some numbers are doubled up, the first number of each row represents a continuity test to the plug or tran x.
have fun

Many thanks for the up-date, will test later,
Just some info to add-yes vehicle does only drive in 3rd, after shift valves disconected, But does have alot of "slip"
at low speed.
can you let me know where you found the test figures, i searched hi & low but could not find anything..

Speedo works OK, will try valves / controller first,
but will bare sensor in mind if above dont sort it..

Most info is from USA chilton or mitchell workshop manuals . With the plug diconected the transmission should be on max line pressure , so any sign of slip is bad news poss a crack in the 2nd gear drum. double check oil level with engine running.

Thanks AUTOTRANS for the info,
i finally got round to carrying out checks for electrics in-side trans,
Many thanks for the data, all readings are within 5% of the figures, you supplied
ECECPT MV1 which gave reading of 21.3 Ohms ( is that within tolarance, do you think?)
The only other thing (electrical) that is odd, is that the DME had a stored code (P0340-Cam sensor) so i cleared code and gave it quick drive and the code was back,
the reason i have mentioned this is that on these trans the "Turbine Speed" is generated by DME and sent to TCM,
to reference against "Output Speed"...
Is it possible that a faulty cam sensor can upset the TCM???

i will carry out oil check when i get 5 Mins.......

Thank you for youre time trying to help...:top::top:

cam sensor will not cause this , but it need changing , car will lack power with this bad sensor .

also note : the speed sensor is inside the transmission , on the valve body .

you wont see the speed sensor like other vehicles outside the transmission .

Just need to confirm we are all talking about the same transmission ,on my list it should be a GM 4L30E (twin pan). after dec 99 they changed to the 5L40E which did have internal speed sensors . It is important to note the difference between input speed (rpm) and turbine speed(tss) the tcm uses this to monitor lock up status. The shift sol is not to bad but is likely to deteriorate quite rapidly, i think the priorty is to deal with the slip probem first, if the oil level is ok it is probaly a box out job

hi, i dont think this transmission is slipping , if it was, the vehicle will not be in first gear , it will go into fail safe .

speed sensor fault ?

tcm ?

Its just because of the age of this car meaty....

really trying to keep cost down,, very good mate of mine..

so dont wont to be throwing parts on it, until i get the right bit,

(seen that done many times)...

Like that w168 we took in, its still sat in the yard,
its got me beat, that one.. spend a few spare hours on it,
now and then,
and just keep going around in circles, can see it having a looong conversation, with a very BIG hammer soon....:roflmao:

There is a way to bypass all electrics speed sensors ecu ect
and that is to switch the solenoids on/off manually, all you need is 4 wires & 3 switch's the only problem is getting access to the transmission , an old 9pin female plug would be ideal (breakers). it will draw about 2 amps so the cigar lighter is an ideal power source, bit crude but it works just make sure all solenoids are off in reverse. these days they call it tiptronic

That's a point.

There was a rumor going around a company called "Race Logic"? did an add on module, so you had tritronics, flappy paddel thing.

Word on street said that these packed up and took gearbox ecu with it lol
on a F1 race car, press forward, to go down the box (motor bike), and forward up the box.

Igrant bmw drivers always wanted it to 'go faster' by pushing the lever - was an extra module to have led display in clocks.

so customer is sourcing another trans....

Just out of interest can you confirm if tranny was a 4sp GM (twin pan ) or a ZF 5 speed

Thanks for your interest autotrans,
nice to have help from PROS.....:top:

just to add, customer dropped of a an original DTC printout, prior to us looking at this,
and on original fault codes,
1, 153 can-dme load signal (OLD)
2, 112 N to D at high speed (OLD)
3, 100 gear check 3 times (NEW)

on the DTC 100 oil temp recorded at
1=98 degC
2=102 degC
3=100 degC
are theese temps normal?? as they seem rather high??

autotrans
24th January, 2011, 04:06 PM
If the vehicle is skiping 2nd or slipping the fault codes can be ignored for the time being. transmissions tend to
run pretty warm ? but i would expect temps in excess of 115c at least before problems . incidently if you run the launch software on BMW the temperature runs cooler the harder you drive the vehicle ???

i dont know what software pulled the first readings...
just waiting for replacement trans to be be found,

will strip old box when its out, and update thread with what we find...

hi , oil temp looks ok , no real fault with transmission .

i am looking at the can fault ,

i hope you dont have the same problem when you change the transmission , because i have change transmission ecu before .

Appreciate Digital-Kaos more than most things in life.

It's great when a car comes in, you go straight for the fault, then just tell everybody that you knew because 'of the word on the street' or it was 'a rumor going around'.

had one, non start, other day, would never have thought of removing the front bumber
thanks to DK, sorted it

problem is nowadays, with so much electronics in vehicles, is easy to overlook mechanical fault...

Jatco 5 speed i know these well, never had to change an E C U on one. solenoids can be a problem 2/4 duty cycle,
pressure reg & shift sol A are the most common. they can all be done in situ. let us know how the vehicle drives, late or harsh shifts skipping 3rd ect.
