I am wanting to dump the configuration from the BSI in a 2003MY Peugeot 206 and copy it to a replacement. The original BSI still operates correctly but has developed an intermittent fault. BSI has a ST95160 EEPROM

I was hoping to read the original EEPROM in circuit, and having read this (http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/f178/95160-eeprom-44871/) thread and this (http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/f152/isp-st95160-45306/) (thanks to adam and those who replied!) it seems pretty inconclusive as to whether it can be done or not (I'm quite happy to desolder the chip in the replacement for the purposes of uploading the dump though, just that I want to mess with the original BSI as little as possible as the car still runs and I need to keep it on the road!)

I haven't purchased any of the equipment yet for doing this, and it is going to be a one-off project, so I'm looking for recommendations for an inexpensive programmer for doing the job (I'm happy to build from a kit if necessary).

Willem programmer is cheap and does the job, look here:

SIVAVA - Advance Willem EPROM Programmer and Adapters EEPROM PIC MCU BIOS (http://www.sivava.com/)

I did consider a Willem, but frankly it is overkill - like buying a complete tooklit when all I want is one screwdriver :D

I'm looking for something that'll simply read/write 95XXX/25cXXX EEPROMS (maybe using PonyProg or similar).

If the BSI is same sw version, you can desolder the old eeprom and solder to the new BSI, without having to use a programmer.

I don't want to physically disturb the circuit of the old BSI if at all possible - as I said the car is currently in use and I can't risk it being off the road for too long (only as long as it would take to unplug the BSI from the car, read EEPROM and then plug back in).

Does anyone have experience of this programmer?

I have read in a few threads of people sourcing programmer hardware from Bulgaria so I am assuming this is the shop?! :)

If you don't want to keep the car aside for a longer time, I would recommend you desolder eeprom and read / replace or whatever you want to do. If you read in circuit, you can corrupt data and you give yourself a lot of headache.

OK - I'll consider myself well warned :) I think this might be a case of 'if it ain't broke don't fix it'. The car is running at the moment so I'll keep the job and tools on the backburner...

Good decision :)
