Have you tired to restore File System in safe mode? If not here's how
1. With the system in standby mode. Press and hold the power button down until the system turns on and then off again. Release the power button. Very important to hold the power button until the console shuts off and to release the power button before continuing to step 2.
2.After about 1 - 2 seconds press and hold the power button again, until you hear 2 consecutive beeps. Release the power button. During this step you will actually here three beeps. There will be one single beep then a short delay followed by the 2 consecutive beeps. Only release the the power button after the 2 consecutive beeps.
3.You will then be instructed to plug in a controller, via the usb cord, and press the PS button.
4.At this point the PS3 Recovery Menu will be shown on the screen.
I would start with option 3
hopefully this'll sort you out
good luck.

I know your having problems getting the firmware on but if you want to jailbreak do not update to 3.56 you want 3.55

Have you got a hacked psp?
if so this may help

What console do you have Phat or Slim? If Your looking to Jailbreak You can downgrade from 3.55 and 3.50 on Phat, 3.55 or 3.50 downgrade on Slim will brick your console , In some cases you can downgrade from 3.55 on slim as long as it wasnt shipped with 3.55 retail on it (IE Upgraded to 3.50 or 3.55)
I have done at least 20 of these consoles using amazebreak dongle running 3.41 with 3.55 spoof. If it where me i would download 3.50 firmware and jailbreak from there

Alandogg maybe you should read the thread before posting!!!
Alandogg may have the answer to your problem in a round about way because if you don't have a hacked psp you could buy a downgrading dongle and try and unbrick it in factory/service mode they are very cheap these days due to custom firmwares making dongles a thing of the past.

Alandogg maybe you should read the thread before posting!!!
.
I did read the thread???
@Iman Why you keep referring to a psp and not PS3?
@xblade, what kind of console do you have? phat or slim as this changes things and are you trying to downgrade with the option of jailbreaking? If you are NOT jailbreaking then the latest official update will be fine. there are also other options without having a jailbreak dongle to enter service mode
iman
7th February, 2011, 07:16 PM
@AlanDogg I suggest you read it again from the top.
I keep referring to a psp and not PS3?
Because there is a project is called PS3Jig, and it converts your standard Sony PSP into a factory service mode jig that may help xblade unbrick his console.
It's in the tread

@iman yep read again from top of thread, but it still doesnt answer the questions i asked xblade! Who still hasnt answered many of the replies! My main question asked is the console a PS3 PHAT or SLIM. I dont see an answer from the top of the thread mentioning the console type can you?

hi its a phat 80gb us ps3 was never chiped or anything i think i got no hd with it and i have 2 hdds here and the ps3 wont update the system onto the drive or whatever it does just gets to 99% then it says no app data was found or something like that?? im not looking to jailbreak it or anything just want it to work

@Xblade, I have had this probs on a phat before and a few of these options have worked for me.
Format your usb flash drive again Fat 32 (not quick format)
1. Update placing your flash drive in the usb port nearest the blueray drive.
2. Try another flash drive incase you existing flash drive has a bad sector on it. (Format fat 32 again not quick option)
3. Put firmware on a CD-R and update via disc.
Your console at the moment isnt bricked, if it was bricked you wouldnt even get the option to update firmware nor would the hard drive spin up. sometimes the eeprom on the ps3 can become corrupt causing the same symptoms due to glitch in previous firmware or not being shut down properly.
See how you get on

thanks but that does not really help me because there is no data at all on hd and no xmb on ps3 just the system could not load please press start and select at the same time to update 3.50 or later then 99% comes the it says there no data found or something its doing my head in

ok bud, heres another option you may not have tried, I havent tried it myself but makes sense as these console do ferk up hardware wise.
(Taken from another Forum)
you need a new hard drive. or you can try removing the cmos battery and short it out.BRICK TYPE #1 of 3
*** 60% forever loop - Gets to between 59% to 62% displays an error.
Answer: Your bluetooth/wireless/card reader modules is either loose, NOT the original ones shipped with your machine, or they are broken or non-working in parts.
Fix: Try removing them, and replacing or cleaning the ribbon cable, if that does not work, unsolder the 8pin EEPROM containing the mac/bluetooth/usb info, and solder onto a know working module.
BRICK TYPE #2 of 3
*** 65% forever loop - Gets to between 64% to 68% displays an error.
Answer: Your blu-ray drive is either loose, NOT the original one, or part of the drive board is dead, even tho it was playing discs before!
Fix: Try removing it, and replacing or cleaning all the ribbon cables, if that does not work, unsolder the 48pin BGA firmware chip and solder onto a know working drive board (very hard to do!!)
BRICK TYPE #3 of 3
*** 99% freeze loop - Gets to 99% and just sits there looking dumb!
Answer: Either your HDD is damaged or has a bad boot sector, or the reset signal on your motherboard is not working.
Fix: Try another power supply, seems to work in my cases, or replace the small eject/reset/power board in the front of the motherboard. (If HDD, see below)
IF ALL ELSE FAILS
And the FINAL answer, if all the above fails, normal due to bad download via wireless, or hdd corrupts the update, in these cases you will normall see fails at 10% or 20%, and for sure before it reachs 50%, in ALL cases, kiss this HDD goodbye, and your save files, because if you try again with SAME HDD you will be back in a loop, and need to redo the below FIX again:
The for sure FINAL un-brick fix (if all the above fails on your unit):
#1: Remove the looping HDD, and throw it away!
#2: Disassmble your PS3, and unplug the battery!
#3: Find another PS3 HDD that is from working machine which is using the same firmware that you WERE using before!
#4: Wait about 30 minutes for the removed battery to drain from your PS3.
#5: Reassemble your PS3
#6: Turn on your PS3 with the new HDD, BUT GO RIGHT AWAY into RECOVERY!
#7: At recovery menu, pick ONLY option "RESTORE PS3 SYSTEM" (i think #5)
#8: Answer all the appearing prompts, for lang./date/time/internet, etc.
#9: You now should have a working PS3 again running on the older firmware
At this stage, you can decide to try the update again, but if it fails, again you need to throw away the HDD, and get another one, or use your PC to ZERO-FILL it to get back into the recovery menu, after setting up the ZERO-FILLed HDD on another older firmware PS3.

You could also try connecting your sata drive to your pc and do a low level format then putting the drive back in and trying again.
If the p3s isnt formatting the drive correctly you will get issues. you could try using acronis true image to do this, i had an issue with the wii that wouldnt write to the drive properly and acronis done the trick (Its all an elimination process bud)

hi what you mean zero fill it ?? i dont have a working ps3 hdd just 1 new onw
AlanDogg
8th February, 2011, 12:51 PM
When most users today talk about "low-level formatting" a drive, what they are really talking about is doing a zero-fill. That procedure will restore a functional drive (that is, one that does not have mechanical problems) to the condition it was in when received from the factory. There are occasions when a modern hard disk can become so badly corrupted that the operating system cannot recover it, and a zero-fill can help in this situation. Stubborn boot sector viruses (http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/file/struct_Viruses.htm) for example can be hard to eradicate without resorting to low-level intervention. Since the zero-fill cleans all programs and data off the drive it will get rid of almost any data-related problem on the drive, such as viruses, corrupted partitions and the like. Just remember that it's a bit like burning down your house to get rid of termites: you lose everything on the drive.
Whats the make and model number of the drive you are using?

You stated earlier that modding the console IE jailbreaking is not your intention.
1.So have you downloaded the latest 3.56 Firmware from the official Sony website?
2.What program are you using for extracting the download? IE winrar, Winzip , 7-Zip?
3.What download manager are you using IE , FF?
4. Any previous problems downloading from the internet like corrupt files?
Just elimination process bud

Just a thought Here,
Have you got a powered USB HDD (with a fat 32 partition on it) or USB powered HUB?
If so try the firmware on the usb HDD, see if that works or if you have the powered Hub plug your USB pen into it and try to load firmware from there through the powered Hub.
Your USB ports may not be getting enough power through them?
I'm just thinking out loud so don't know if it would work, but no harm in trying.

Ahh Valid point @AllyCoops could be dodgy usb ports, especially if they have been well used, the fine copper pins can wear over time causing bad connections

Dodgy usb ports wouldn't stop xblade updating by disk.
@xblade I just wanna ask a couple of questions ... Do you know how it got bricked?
Had it been opened before you got it? if so do you know why?
AlanDogg
9th February, 2011, 12:19 PM
Dodgy usb ports wouldn't stop xblade updating by disk.
It could if the ports have a short on the usb pins which could cause the motherboard to crash or become unstable. The console may also become unstable if there is an over heating issue which can cause hanging and eventually results in YLOD error. which may be the reason why you are mentioning if it has been opened before!
