Dream MultiMedia, a German company, designed and built a Linux based box (it was hugely influenced by the old Premiere TV Dbox2 receiver which could be debugged and forced to run a version of Linux).
The new box was called a Dreambox 500 and it was massively successful. Due to it's success many Chinese manufacturers decided to clone the hardware, manuals and packaging and have been passing them off as genuine ever since.
Dream MultiMedia stopped manufacturing the real DM500 a long time ago, so any boxes that are for sale these days are almost certainly clones, the clones are also incredibly cheap to buy compared to genuine hardware, clones sell for approx ?55 whereas the genuine stuff would be much more expensive.
Don't worry whether or not you have a clone DM500 as the clone market has matured to the extent that todays clones are superior to the original DMM hardware.

They are good machines mate.
IMO, the clone market wouldn't exist if DMM would make their prices more reasonable.
BTW, not all Dreambox clones are as good, the DM800 clone has tuner issues.

Remember there is more than one type of Dreambox, there is an entire range of different machines.
We have the 7000, 5600, 500, 500+, 600 and 7020 which are all Enigma 1 machines.
Then there are the 500HD, 7020HD, 7025, 800HD, 800HD SE and finally the 8000 which are all Enigma 2.
There is also a shitty model called the 100, this does not run Enigma.
Enigma is the operating system on your box, older machines like the 500 use E1, newer machines like the 800 and 8000 have tuner problems.
AFAIK all Enigma 1 clones are perfect these days and all Enigma 2 clones have issues.

Seems Rubberduck is unhappy with me for claiming that todays clone DM500's are better than the original genuine DM500's, but rather than debate it, he's decided to leave me negative rep. :-)

I got a clone DM800HD without realising it had a CABLE
tuner in it.
So i got a decent Satellite tuner Rev M & it works perfectly.
If you do get a clone, maybe an idea to get a good tuner.
My clone works faster than my original DM800HD, which could be down to the tuner in it being quite old now.

I've got a genuine DM500, I bought it 4 (nearly 5 really) years ago.. Now the early 500s were a joke to be honest but I just ordered one for a friend from YaoXin and it's technically excellent..
The early 500 clones had pi$$ poor tuners and wouldn't drive a motor.. the latest spec clones are very very good and even come with an external power switch, an improvement on the genuine model..
I wouldn't say the new clones are 'better' but they are comparable.. definitely..
And for ?50 a box that is comparable to the one i paid nearly 5 times that amount for is excellent
The latest spec "800 Pro" clones are very good too, with improved tuners..
As always, clones are made by many people in China with varying degrees of professionalism..
YaoXin make excellent products, I know someone who bought one of their 10.2" Android Pads and its fantastic..
