I have a friend with a 2003 Passat ( 1.6L engine ). He bought a used key off eBay in order to have it matched to his car. He also purchased a virgin id48 chip ( according to VCDS he has a IMMO type 3 so he needs a new chip ).

He got his key cut at a blacksmith and wanted to test it if it works ok ( mechanically of course ). Got the key in ignition, immo kicked in and when started the engine, it cut off after 2 seconds - which is normal. After 2 hours, he got home and wanted to show someone how the key doesn't start the car until is matched to the dash/immo but when he used it again, although the IMMO SIGN kept flashing, the engine started and kept going. He has done a few short trips with the car and everything is working fine ever since. How is he able to drive the car normally with an unmatched key + immo being activated in the dash? The only difference is that when he uses the "new" key, the BC doesn't show anything. Other than that, everything is perfectly fine. When using his old key, everything is on, no immo sign.

How is this possible ?

PS. What interface can he read his login code with ? He tried a VAG K+Can 1.4 but it appears that only works for diesel engines ( reading the ECU ). He has a VDO something dash.

he must try to read the dash, not the ecu

the immobiliser in the ECU is deactive.
thats your problem.
just re-active your immo in the ecu with vagdaschcan, and learn the new key in dash.
