Sorry forgot to mention, its MC912DG128 (3K91D) in this dash so i dont believe its mcu as only 908 series had problems with mcu

Oh yes they do, I am doing Volvo S60 2003 with MC912DG128A (3K91D) next week.

Just had a customer with a 2003 Volvo V70 call me and he is bringing me the car at the end of this week. I guess the odometer is dead or only functions sometimes. Does this sound like an MCU problem and it that very common on this type of vehicle? Does the processor go bad or it is just bad solder joints? I can purchase a new MCU from Mouser.com for around $40, but I can probably get another instrument panel display from a local recycling yard for about the same price and reprogram it. Any thoughts or ideas?

There aren't any bad solder points. Heat up the old MCU a little bit and read FLASH+EEPROM. Buy new MCU and program it with old one's FLASH+EEPROM.

Okay customer dropped off the vehicle and I was wondering if this sounds like a bad MCU

1. All gauge functions are completely dead (tach, speedo, fuel and coolant)
2. All backlighting is completely dead
3. Turn signals don't illuminate on the cluster
4. The LCD's for the mileage don't light up but I can still read the mileage

The 100uf/50v is just changed as a precaution. The main reason for these clusters to fail is the solderings. Sometimes the MCU also dies, so there are some variations.

I posted my instructions recently here. (http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/f174/volvo-cluster-problem-190184/)
