Hi All,

A little background...

I have a VAG K+CAN Commander clone. I tried it because VAG-COM 912 clone have not been able to get it working. Been wanting to figure out how to fix it, but haven't had time . I think I have everything I need, but never got into EEPROM flashing, and need to learn the basics. But that's all in other threads.

I experimented with the K+CAN a couple months ago. Needed more info than generic on a 2003 Jetta TDI. Have several different scan tools, but none with good Euro coverage. Found out that the VWTOOL software would not work on Vista or Win7, but did get it to work on XP. The Commander software worked great with Win7 then, I was able to access the cluster and could have changed the mileage, but did not need to on that car.

Now trying to help a friend with this 2000 Cabrio. He replaced the cluster with a used one for tach and speedo trouble. I thought might be able to increase the mileage on the used cluster to match the car. It will not detect the VDO cluster, in fact I couldn't make it do much of anything like it did on the 2003. I don't remember seeing so many options, on the 03 it seemed to detect eveything on it's own and just worked. I tried many available modules and protocols, looks like it wants K-Line only. Program opened with high speed CAN, and Kombi 07 first selected. I tried other modules, the EDC15x choice would seem to try, but would just hang and eventually crash.

Will next try scanner to make sure data line OK, maybe try Commander program on XP box. Any help or ideas appreciated, I told friend today might not work out..Sorry to be long-winded....Thanks to all..

If you have a golf 4 cabrio you cannot set it via OBD. the dash has no k-line and also no diagnostic features.
you can easily check it with vcds. if you cannot connect to dash the case is clear

Thank you.. I think it is Golf 4 for 2000. So how can we correct the odometer. I have the original dash. Is there a chip I can (try) flash, or swap?

Also working to get VCDS up and running, just checking for comm? Getting help in other thread, will have this car over the weekend to play with.

Golf 4 cabrio should have same/similar dash to golf 3?
In that case you can only program the mileage directly on the eeprom.....so take cluster out and open it....

if you've got old dash, you shud try swapping the eeproms, be careful opening the speedo

What tools do you have for programming?

that dash should have 93c?6 (probably 93c46) eeprom so depending on what tools you have you either can program incircuit or desolder and use programmer lik PA for example to red/write the chip....

I have Willem programmer (clone?), never tried it.

Could I just swap EEPROMs from one cluster to the other??

I looked at old dash before, looks like not easy to get apart.

swapping eeproms should work if its same dash, but i have never done it before so i cant tell you for sure

I lost the nice detailed message been working on when closed wrong window...

Basically first time messing with chip dumps at all. Unsoldered a 93C46EN, experimented (blindly) with Willem programmer. Took different reads with different settings. First time "Copy.bin" 1024B, not see how mileage stored. Other attempt different settings 8 - 16 bit, similar chip #'s 128B dumps? Could not get back to the 1K dump again, when select 93C46 again. Doing something wrong, or just not seeing in the darkness.

In picture 93C46EN was just below blue cap left of middle.
Bringing in car now to remove "new" dash, unsolder that chip, try reads, solder in "old" chip.

Thanks again

Thanks to all.. rrador, z786 and others. Again this was my first time messing with EEPROMs, good one to experiment with where had 2 clusters. Learned a lot about this Chinese programmer and Willem software. I see there's a lot more stuff in there I'll never understand, just figuring out the basics for now is a big step for me.

Swapped "old" chip to "new" dash after dumping both. Noticed that file size does not matter. Old chip 32 bytes with 158,175 miles, new chip dumped 128 bytes - had about 104,422 (?) miles.

Attached both dumps here, maybe you guys can tell how the mileage is coded. I bet could have written old dump to other chip for same result, but did not try.

Also see where original dash probably could have been fixed for speedo & tach problem. Noticed some corrosion around stepper motors soldered leads.

BTW: The LCD displays, must be some kind of "micro-projectors"? Never seen anything like this before. Was tempted to plug it in while apart for a look, but more concerned about it ever working again...:hello:

Thanks again...

the 1st dump doesnt look right
2nd one is what it shud look like :)

mileage isnt so hard to work out once you know what your looking for
