Most common is lack of ventilation. Leaving a window open on the security latch will cure most damp problems. If the room is cold and drafty having the window open some good old thick curtains will cull the draft but still allow venting.

Most of the damp is from ones own breathing in a small room.

The mould growth is caused by the damp which is left by moisture. There are 3 types of damp -

Interstitial damp (condensation)
Penetrating damp
Rising Damp

The most common is interstitial damp, this is caused by a lack of heat and ventilation which changes the dew point. In summary this means that the temparatue in the room drops and as the temparature drops the amount of moisture that the air can hold becomes less - therefore it deposits the moisture where ever it is, usually on cold surfaces.

Heat the air and vent the room - and treat the mould with a anti bacterial paint to remove the mould growth. If the mould is left the spores break off into the air, can be breathed in and can easily cause chest problems.

i've come across this problem in peoples house's over the years it's due to lack of ventilation & heat in room
people don't like air vents due to draught's they cause
best vents are passyfier vents PASSYFIER VENT MK 2 (http://www.sovchem.co.uk/passyfier-vent-mk-2.html) i use all the time never had any problems with them and are easy to install, they let humidity out of room but don't let cold draughts in like air vents do
