I got my lads Mk1 Ready for paint in re-built bare shell, first were after a cheap but good paint job in warwickshire if any advice there.
Next were looking at putting a 2lt pinto from a capri in place (funds wont let anything else go:smokin:)
we have the engine box and all and if i remember right years ago i did the same and sump was altered to jump the crossmember, as i recall i think i cut the steel original and welded the thing back up and worked well.
is there a sump already available for the job?
does anyone know of other probs on fitting this engine, space wise etc.
its been a long time since tinkered with an escort but my lads had this for around 6 years now and time to get it finished .

Done this in the 80's think the capri sump fits as it is differant to the cortina one opposite way round if I remember correctly
When I done it used to use a 3.0 capri weber twin chock instead of twin forties gave just as much umph as the forties and was easier to set up
Oh the days of addjustable billstiens bring em back and janspeed exhausts

thanks for reply and responce,
The 2lt Capri pinto engine we have is proberbly 80`s though cant recall as had it sat in the garage for around 2 years, bought it of ebay for 50 nicker complete all, we just turn it over by hand once in a while though the sump is to the rear on this which inter-fears with the crossmember when in situ and maybe if a 1" was cut of the front it would fit but nice if one fit lets say from an earlier capri where maybe smaller, maybe look at this and research or any ideas would be great.
The twin choke webber is what we have and as you say easy to set up though in comparison with todays cars ! but then the escort is nearly forty years old and just love um still.
thanks

You should try a 3.0 weber as it gives more power fuel than the 2.0 one
Done this with cortinas as well 20 odd years ago very noticable difference than the 2.0 weber ones off the granada and capri 3.0 are the same if memory servs me correctly an fit onto the 2.0 manafold
there used to be places that allready had engine mounts made up for this conversion and sumps already done welded a few myself also had one or two that the oil seeped through the welds so started to buy them try the rs owners club site you may be able to get them from there
good luck they where the best and noisiest cars I ever had loved everyone of them though more caractor than todays cars

now you are going back a long time i rember you don't have to cut the sub frame you fit the sump on backward and make up the oil pickup pipe from the old escort and cortina pips for power you used 1.6.L cam in a 2.L engine the one with 2 dots on it the same is in the gxt and gt

going back too far, about 20 years the last time i drove one of these.
interesting, when you say turn the sump round and alter the pickup, yeh thats a definate try.
the crossmember was not to be cut, but around 1" off the front of the sump where hits the crossmember (you say turn it round but the sump is shaped and for the crank at front of sump)
i have since found that you can get a ali one but to find one is hard work.
thanks guys

the best sump to use is an alloy one from a rs2000 i would guess they are hard to come by nowadays but they keep the capacity and they have baffles inside to stop the oil splashing around.
also if i remember you needed a different bellhousing and you needed to move the gearbox mounts and enlarge the gearstick hole
i had a mk2 rs2000 when i was a young'n but i helped some of my friends build lookalikes.
you would also need to modify the slam panel if you were putting a bigger rad in

you have good taste in cars stinky 2 my mate had a mark 1 escort years ago we flew about all over in it when i was a young lad it had big super oscars spotlights on the front and 1 on the back on a switch inside the car we used to use it as a blind light when racing other cars in the night MAD OR WOT,he sold that and got the mark 2 that had a 2 litre overhaed cam in it it was fast as fish, that fit straight in if i remember right,i didnt know the mk 1 was different fit,i had a mk 5 cortina with a 2.1 pinto in it kent cam rl31,twin choke weber, with 1.6 sierra 5 speed box cross member had to be turned round on the box and 1.6 back axel all the void bushes removed and solid nylon bushes in ther place,it had no play on the back end at all and was fast as fish up till about 80 -90 nowt could catch it,1.9 peugeot gti"s and 16 valve astra gte"S,cavalier 130"s couldnt touch it off the mark,i showed some propa posh lads up with ther girlfreinds sat next to em at the traffic lights ect with my old mark 5 it had a sighn on the back saying GET IN SIT DOWN SHUT UP AND HANG ON, wot a laff,i grew up a bit and bought the granny 2.8 i ghiax its the best car ive ever drove 2 owners from new ,smooth as a babys arse 17 years ive had it,its my mini bentley, its off road now in my garage , brand new wings, bonnet, sills, arches, front panels, the works have been put on,just a few more bits of weld then a full propa spray job i carnt wait, then finished with a nice set of 17 inch alloys wi low pro"S to fill the the arches,im just gunna use it on nice sunny days for a run out with the wife and young un,good luck with your escort bud, that will turn a few heads when done,

Nothing better than seeing an old mark 1 rip the sh#t out of some little boy racer's corsa just because he thinks the cars old and not up to it only to find a nice cossie sitting in place of the pinto

got to agree with nelly stick a cossie in it

ps have a look at " scottish old skool escorts" website if you need some insparation

a 2 litre pinto in a mark 1 escort would blow a corsa off the planet no need for cosworth engine, and would be a lot cheaper to do,i luv cosies, myself 2 litre double over head cam turbo if i remember,a mate of mine had a COSWORTH KILLER thats wot he called it,it was a XR4i 1984 ,They had the standed engine 2.8 injection V6 [the same as in my granny] but he got it bored out to a 3.1.27 and had a garet turbo fitted and a few other things done,it was as fast as fishhhhhhhhhh,i drove it and got out shaking, and i thort i was the stig in them days so wasnt shakin often,XR4i 3.1.27 V6 turbo,v cossie 2.0 double cam turbo,DID I SAY FAST.

i had a rs 2000 mk1 a few years ago and that had the pinto
in it and did all the stuff to it has you do.
it had the 6 dial clocks, recaro seats, split diff and the gearbox
was so close ratio it was a top car but money and rust got to it on the floor.
the problem a lot of people got was the rear of the gearbox on the 2 litre was to large to fit into a normal mk1
