Newbie .. Receiver Question / Poll?

Hello,

First of all I am a newbie here. So excuse if some questions seem silly ..

I am in the status of buying a receiver ..
.....and are wondering what receiver to get?

Anyway -- I am unsure about this or that model.
Any advice is appreciated.

So far I considered a Dreambox 500C or 600C for cable.
Can someone advice me on buying a

- not too expensive model
- for cable DVB-C, no HDD ..
- that can be patched and tweaked using Linux?
-> seems there is a huge price difference if I want to watch and record a different channel (sec. tuner)?
- not sure if need this feature ... can I add a second Tuner to dreambox 500C later?
- are there boxes with GigaBit Ethernet connection?

Secondly, I was wondering -- if this board has ever made a boardpoll regarding receivers?
- to figure out which ones are the most used and best supported ones ..
- may be it is a stupid question because some of the threads are for particular
brands or models ...

Hmm I thought it would be nice.

As for best support, the events over the last couple of weeks show which come out near the top of the list and which come near the bottom. Each is personal choice and your answers will be as varied as the boxes available...

It would be best to read the countless other discussions on this very topic and see what input the other members have already given...
