mapping or read/write files?

winOls/Race2000 is good for newbie, but depends how much u want to spend.

KWP2000, galettos can read/write files for very cheap, but can cause problems as are cloned tools and may brick somebodys ecu.

Its always the 'the evil kwp bricked my ecu', never 'I was an idiot and I bricked my ecu with a flashtool' lol lol pretty sure I'm near 50-60 successful writes with mine though Ive better tools.
Best to start with is iron, hot air and willem, winols is good and theres tutorials about the net, the learning curve is steep but you actually learn something then you deal in real figures not random %. Other good sources of tuning theory are available aroundthe net also, like pgmfi, tdiclub, open ecu, etc etc... to learn what do with all the maps you find and which ones to look for.

the best at the moment (in my opinion is winols)
but also the most complicated if you can read and write
in the ecu and you just need a software to tune the map and also to correct your checksum i would recomend ecm (for a newbie) because its practically self explanatory and also there are a few italian tutorial videos on youtube check that out
