You seem to only be able to buy more than about 3 months if you add a PayPal account, and this does turn on auto renewal but there's some simple steps to remove the auto renewal once you've bought as many as you can:
Login to your PayPal account
Click Details on any of the Xbox transactions
Click "View Payment Agreement Details"
Click Cancel
This is also a good opportunity to remove any credit/debit cards tied to your Xbox Live account, but make sure you remove them before you cancel the PayPal agreement!
Act fast though, they pull the plug on these deals pretty fast!
ps you do have to do it 1 month at a time & does take sometime but at a ?1 who cares
