This is for root only and is not a custom rom. I accept no responsibility if anything goes wrong. Remember to read everything. I am using this method as apposed to a one click method as it will stand you in good stead if you decide to flash a custom rom or mess things up in the future and have to flash back to stock.

THIS WILL VOID YOUR GUARANTEE

Always unmount and remove external sd card before flashing.

First make sure you can boot into recovery and download using the three button method. For recovery this is (with phone off) hold down volume up and home button (middle one at the bottom) then press and hold power button until phone boots. For download this is volume down home button then press and hold power button to exit recovery navigate to reboot now using volume up and down buttons and select with home button. To exit download just hold down power button.
Next step is to download the drivers for your phone
windows 64bit
Download Samsung Galaxy S USB Driver for Windows x64 Driver for Windows XP X64 / Windows Vista64 / Windows 7 x64 - Softpedia (http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Samsung/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x64.shtml)
windows 32bit
Download Samsung Galaxy S USB Driver for Windows x86 Driver for Windows XP / Windows Vista / Windows 7 - Softpedia (http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&drKey=1359&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.xda-developers.com%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D728929&v=1&libid=1309097582975&out=http%3A%2F%2Fdrivers.softpedia.com%2Fget%2FMOB ILES%2FSamsung%2FSamsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x86.shtml&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.addictivetips.com%2Fmobile%2F how-to-root-and-unroot-samsung-galaxy-s-i9000-with-a-single-click%2F&title=%5BDrivers%5D%20MS%20Windows%20x86%20and%20x 64%20USB%20Drivers%20for%20Samsung%20Galaxy%20S%20-%20xda-developers&txt=http%3A%2F%2Fdrivers.softpedia.com%2Fget%2FMOB ILES%2FSamsung%2FSamsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x86.shtml)

Not that I'm aware of, you will still need to unlock the phone after rooting which is relatively simple ( I think) but carries it's own risks. It is well known that unlocking a galaxy s can make a complete mess of your imei number resetting it to zeros which sometimes stops the appmarket from working. The way to protect against this is after rooting you will be able to see all system folders when you plug your phone into the pc. The folder you are looking for is "efs" this stores all the phones sensitive data including imei number copy this to the pc then you are relatively safe to unlock the phone,,,if anything goes wrong during unlock then just copy the efs folder back onto the phone.

so even if i phoned vodafone and managed to get the unlock code i might still be better off rooted? (to back up the efs file)

Rooting the phone gives you full control over what you can backup and also allow you to install custom rom but only after having it unlocked....If you try to install custom rom before unlocking you stand a good chance of bricking the phone. As you may have guessed I am a firm believer that all phones should come with root access after all why should we not be allowed to have full access. It's like going to the shop and buying fish and chips and being tild you can't touch the fish...not even to move so you can get to the chips under it...You can make a complete mess of your phone very quickly with superuser privelages but we have had administrator privelages in windows for years now so i think we are just about responsible enough

Hi
I have rooted the galaxy s but I cant get into the custom recovery to install a custom rom. I cannot remember exactly what it says as an error but I will post it later on. I have googled and there was a problem with clockwork mod on this model.
Basically as it stands the phone has no recovery mode whatsoever which is not a good place to be in.

Did you not read the guide. The first sentence after the warning and advised removal of sd card clearly states that you need to make sure you can boot into download and recovery by the three button method before continuing. Do you mean you can't install the zip file for the custom rom from recovery or you cannot get into recovery at all.....Is your phone sim locked. What network are you on.

Hi yes I read the guide but it was rooted before I saw this from a different one on xda. I have the phone along with me now and when booting to recovery it reads.

--Installing update package--
Finding update package.....
Opening update package...
Veryfing update package ...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:siganture verification failed
Installation aborted

I believe the update zip is the custom recovery from CM is this correct.

If it helps find an answer I used the 3 button method and the phone went into mode with large yellow triangle and says downloading Do not turn off target

You cannot instal the update.zip because you have the wrong version of recovery mode. The yellow triangle screen is the download screen. To get to recovery you hold volume up instead of volume down. This will give you a version number in the top right. If your phone is not sim locked to a carrier your best option is to flash a full custom rom with built in cwm through odin 3, this will change your recovery version allowing you change roms with update.zip files in future.

Thanks mt I will give it a shot, elsewhere says it is e3 error and the firmware is checking for original rom before installation.
There is a fix but have not had the time today.

As long as your phone is not sim locked you should be pretty safe with a straight of custom rom install, I am a huge fan of darky roms they are very fast and very stable with excellent support and install instructions, they also have the bonus of running a darkcore kernel which will support voodoo sound.

Thank you I have a couple to try and one is a darky rom, I will attempt the fix first just so that I can backup the phone as it exists now just in case the wifey doesnt like. Failing that I have found odin with some instructions and will go for it.

samfirmware has all the stock roms if she doesn't like it mate you just download the one you want and flash it with odin3 stock phone no root just incase you ever need to send it for repair. I am currently running darkyrom jvq v10.2.2 final.....Yes this does not seem the latest but is actually newer than jvr v10.3 as darky was not personally involved with 10.3 and when he came back found a few bugs so took a step back and used jvq as it is a much more stable base for the s than jvr.

Just an update, followed your advice and got familiar with odin and killed the phone once or twice. Now I am running darkys 10.2 without problem :)
One thing strange is that it will not allow to install the darky OTA app, comes up with this app is incompatible! Not a worry though and thanks for your help here Highlander.

There are 2 different darky apps. The newer one is darky rom

Edit....sorry for the wrong info didn't realize darky had changed the rom to ota

I've just installed the darkyota and it works perfect. I'm on 10.2.2 final, did you remember to give it superuser privileges. If you can't get it to work drop an email to darky, robbie or ficeto and let them know. I'd try ficeto first as he developed the app.

I have used numerous roms.....and the smoothest one I find is the hybrid roms. I was on version 5 for a while with gb 2.3.4 and now have upped to v11.0 with GB 2.3.6. Very good ROM.

You can search it in the XDa forum...really nice.
